Replacing Wendy Greuel in the Valley

A juicy $2.5 million City Council seat opens in anti-Villaraigosa territory

With City Councilwoman Wendy Greuel’s big win on March 3 to replace Laura Chick as city controller, San Fernando Valley residents might get to choose from several up-and-coming local leaders to fill Greuel’s empty seat — or they might have an insider forced upon them in an unusual but legal maneuver to appoint Greuel’s successor.

Under law, City Council members can decide whether to let citizens choose a representative or instead, appoint one themselves.

Greuel’s barbell-shaped District 2 links highly activist Sunland-Tujunga’s horse country with urbanized and equally activist Sherman Oaks and Studio City. Much of District 2 rebelled on March 3, giving Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa less than 50 percent of the vote — and rejecting his Measure B solar plan.

While Villaraigosa did well in North Hollywood and northern Van Nuys, he won less than 50 percent in Sunland and Tujunga and in big swaths of Sherman Oaks, Studio City, Valley Glen and Valley Village. Measure B was even more unpopular, losing in almost every voter-rich neighborhood flanking the Ventura Freeway, as well as in Sunland-Tujunga.

Political analysts say that if a special election is held, the voter rebellion in District 2 may spell trouble for two possible candidates close to Villaraigosa: Tamar Galatzan, a member of the Los Angeles Unified School Board, and Cindy Montanez, a politician from the tiny, economically devastated city of San Fernando.

Others who expressed interest, in a Los Angeles Daily News analysis, are Studio City Neighborhood Council President Ben Neumann, former Sherman Oaks Neighborhood Council President Ken Gerston, and Joan Pelico, a field deputy for City Councilman Jack Weiss.

If the City Council decides against holding a special election, it would be the first time voters have been cut out of such a decision since 1966, when John Ferraro was appointed. Arti Panjwani, media coordinator for the Los Angeles City Elections Division, says that first, “We have to officially certify the March 3 election, [Wendy Greuel] has to vacate the office, and then the council has to decide what they want to do.”

Given the power of incumbency, L.A. history strongly suggests that whoever fills out the last two years of Greuel’s seat will stay until forced out by term limits — in 2023. Because the L.A. City Council is the highest-paid council in the U.S., earning about $179,000 a year, the seat is potentially worth $2.5 million at today’s pay.

Very entertaining to read all these comments, but I would like to add that a hispanic boy friend that I have been dating for a while took me on a date to a very classy event where we had an opportunity to meet this girl gina felix goldman she is very pretty and nice. She was there with her entire family and staff and every one at the event wanted to take pictures with her. She is the niece of a Mexican icon actress Maria Felix. I have been on many dates, but this event my boyfriend took me to was the best date ever. We are so glad we were able to meet the Gina Felix Goldman the niece of this Mexican legend....

My name is Nomyon Pak I live in Burbank. I don't remember a person by the name of Sarah Goodfrey? I have asked around to all my neighbors and they are asking other people. We all go to out neighborhood watch meetings and they don't know of a Sarah Goodfrey. Maybe this person posted the comment with a fake name. She doesn't seem to be a nice person. Maybe this person has a personal vendetta against the woman she was talking about. It seems to me every time someone wants to help out a community there is always someone out there with bad intentions.

  • masha 06/06/2009 4:15:00 PM

This is a response to the negative and slandering accusation that the previous person made by the name of Sarah who says she lives in Burbank. Maybe she doesn't really live in Burbank? Anyway- I am a school teacher originally from Russia and I speak Spanish.I took Spanish classes for many years. I remember clearly watching a Spanish bio/documentary on this girl's family and her background and her aunt was interviewed. Her aunt spoke highly of her family and pictures and video were shown of the family and I saw pictures of this girl who you are speaking negative about and video of her aunt talking about her career and her many marriages. It is very easy to attack, and try to ruin a person's reputation over the internet without that person knowing what is happening and without that person having a fair chance to defend themselves. That is a low blow as far as I am concerned. According to her aunt's statements in the bio/documentary this family has been in the entertainment industry for over 15 years. Why are you being so hatefull? What are your true intentions? According to the previous statements that people have posted, this woman is doing nice things. Maybe you are into politics and you are supporting another candidate? Your negative and slanderring accussation and comments give the impression to people that you are not well- educated.

  • Sarah Goodfrey 05/29/2009 3:37:00 AM

I'm truly amaze to find out that this woman Gina Felix Goldman wants to repleace Wendy in our district, why? Gina Felix Goldman has been conning everyone about her life. She is not related to the legendary Mexican icon Maria Felix and she is not wealthy as she claims. She has been attending such celebrity events because she lies about her family status and people believe her in one way or another. This woman needs to be investigated further about her intentions and her dispicaple lies. I'am warning everyone about this woman that in reality is no good to society!

Responding to commenter #1, I live in the Valley and bought my car in the tiny city of San Fernando, which has been devastated by the free-fall in car sales hitting nationwide. Auto sales is one of the major businesses inside the San Fernando city limits. If the city leaders haven't 'fessed up publicly yet about the big hit they are suffering in sales tax revenue, you better give them a call. Between that and the hit to property values, they are bleeding money in San Fernando. And just a reminder about what year this is, Commenter #1: It's 2009. Using the word "Westside" as a placeholder for white is so, well, so 1972. If you got out a bit more, you'd be amazed how many white folk live elsewhere. Try to be a little more open-minded, eh? -- Jill Stewart

  • moshe 03/17/2009 11:25:00 PM

shalom everyone.... I'm Moshe. I went with my wife and a group of friends to a fundraising event at the Hilton hotel to support the country of Israel. This event was organized by an organization called AiPAC. At this event, Antionio Villaraigosa, Wendy Gruel, Jack Weiss, and other politicians showed up to support Israel. Many people showed up and there was a lot of security. Turns out that at one table, there was this woman you guys are talking about. Gina Felix Goldman. She is married to a Jewish/Israeli man. She was sitting in the same table with the family of the businessman, by the name of Steve Erdman, and heavy donors...Turns out this woman really exists and to top it off she has money and also she speaks Hebrew. What we noticed, is that every politician who I mentioned above, actually went to her table to say hello. She must be very loaded...But I think that if she supports Israel, for me it's a good thing.

Comments 6-10 sound like the start of an orchestrated campaign for Gina Felix Goldman, a woman I'd never heard of til now, described as a saint and miracle worker. #6 starts by saying the seat should go to a Latino/a, but Goldman doesn't sound Hispanic. WAIT we next learn she's the niece of an allegedly famous Mexican actress and then come all of the testimonials. Wonder what else her minions are up to?

  • Scottie 03/17/2009 4:38:00 AM

I have lived in the valley for many years and I know that it is very difficult to get the city to do anything in general. This Gina Felix-Goldman woman everyone is talking about is really helfull. I live exactly near the Glenoaks street area, and I can all tell you that a couple of years back, she bought a lot of trees with her own money and she had a couple of her employees plant them and water them until they were full grown. We now have nice trees in our neighborhood. The area doesn't look like Beverly Hills but these trees make a difference. I remember everyone in the neighborhood calling the city to ask for revitalization and beautification of our area and they didnt' listen to us. But this wonderfull and generous person, who lives in the valley, listened and we now have trees......

  • Larry 03/14/2009 11:58:00 PM

Hello- my name is Larry and I live in the valley. I now have an apartment and a job and am able to take care of my family. I can say that God put a guardian person in my life and that is a woman by the name Gina Goldman who all of you are talking about. I can say that thanks to her generosity and that of her family, I was able to obtain food for my kids when I didn't have a job. I was really a mess. I now can afford to feed my kids and I bought a computer for work. I vote in every election and I hope someone like her would jump in the valley race to bring hope and promise to our neighborhood.

  • Marylne 03/14/2009 3:45:00 AM

Oh, my goodness!!! I know who you are talking about! For my family and me, it is an honor to live close to this Gina Felix Goldman person. When we had a major problem with the city, we went to our local neighborhood meeting and we explained what was going on and she helped. Also everyone at the meeting was complaining about our streets, lack of lighting, pot holes, and so forth... And she helped all of us. She made a phone call and we now have street lights where we live, and stop signs, and she had many streets in our area slurry sealed. Our streets look like new.... I would totally vote for her and help her get votes.....

  • Angel 03/14/2009 3:22:00 AM

This is Angel from Sun Valley/District 2 San Fernando Valley.. the neighborhood that Wendy Gruel, and all the other politicians forgot about right after they won the elections but came knocking at our door when they needed votes. I agree with everyone who commented before me. BUT!- Everyone needs to know that there is out there a classy, intelligent, well-educated, and extremely well-funded, down to earth, not a politician, woman by the name of Gina Felix Goldman. She is known as Gina Goldman in our community. She is the niece of the Mexican actress Maria Felix, and she has friends in the media, friends in the community, friends in Government positions in Mexico and friends in the L.A. city council. I know for a fact that she has always helped in many community projects and funded these projects out of her pocket. She is a businesswoman, businessowner, ex- t.v reporter, and plus she has always lived in the San Fernando Valley. When ever we have a problem with the city she picks up the phone and she gets things done. She doesn't get upset if we knock at her door and ask for help with a situation with the city... We feel she is one of us.....

  • Juan Clinton 03/14/2009 2:31:00 AM

Honestly, I hope a Latino/a (other than Cindy) jumps into this race. We need additional Latino representation. This is a Latino Seat.

  • STUCK IN THE 3RD WORLD 03/13/2009 6:52:00 PM

Handing another position to Montanez would be an outrage. She has already been appointed to plum "do-nothing" well-paid commission seats in return for stepping aside when Alarcon decided he wanted to come back and run for his district when the Council got a pay raise. Another in the crony network and thenGalatzan, a Sleazaraigosa puppet on the school board wih her husband that supported Home Depot in Sunland-Tujunga against the interest of the community. Both are anathema. Glad to see someone like Mary Benson in the comments above express an interest. Let's have people that actually live in the district and know & care about it instead of all these carpetbaggers with other agendas.

  • Mary Benson 03/13/2009 9:12:00 AM

There's another hat in the council District 2 race, and it 's the hat of a western horsewoman, Mary Benson.. I didn't move into the Council District in order to further a political ambition, I was born here. and I won't be moving somewhere else if I'm not successful in a bid for Councilmember. For nearly ten years I have helped organize the community on environmental issues and the environment including a handful of endangered species in the wildlands of the north valley. I do not believe we need to turn every square inch of LA's 449 square miles into an urban landscape, even though developers, and the City's dependance on developer fees has made densifying our surbaban and rural areas a priority. Our conservation and open space plans have not been revisited for decades, our infrastructure is not closely monitored, and our water situation is critical. The City of Los Angeles has stretched its resources to the point that they are unsustainable. We need to step back from the brink and deal with quality of life issues for existing as well as future residents. These are all issues that affect the quality of life. Together we can make a difference.

Tamar & Cindy don't stand a chance in CD2, whether they are appointed or running for the seat. Tamar is married to Brendan Huffman, the former president of VICA, and his bizarre advocacy for a Home Depot in Sunland-Tujunga pretty much decimates any hopes for his wife in this area. Tamar & Cindy are both tied too closely to MV, and that relationship alone makes them pariahs to the locals.

Just out of curiosity Jill, how did you come to the conclusion that the "tiny tiny" City of San Fernando is "economically devastated?" I doubt you've ever been here or knew there was a City of San Fernando. Please research your articles and subjects a little more in depth instead of relying of stereotypes...or perhaps go outside of the "Westside" bubble.
