All Killer, No Filler: Larry Tee, Full Frontal, Hungry Beat

Wednesday, Jan 28 2009
He’ll probably never live down coining the term “electroclash,” but NYC DJ legend Larry Tee’s list of credits and collaborators by far surpass any one label (Disco 2000’s infamous club kid scene, his groundbreaking electro/rock fests, cuts with RuPaul, Scissor Sisters, Princess Superstar, Santogold… the list goes on and on). Needless to say, catching the Tee man at control (with Rye Rye, from M.I.A’s label N.E.E.T., Avalon, 1735 Vine St.; Fri., Jan. 30. or at Mustache Mondays (La Cita, 336 S. Hill St., L.A.; Mon., Feb. 2. is a must for clubbin’ connoisseurs. Much of the ’stache crowd is also sure to flock to the re-opening of Full Frontal, especially now that cocky club king Mario Diaz and dance maven Sir Heffington are on board for the Sunday night fever. Expect the pants to be as tight as the disco beats. Grand Star, 943 N. Broadway, Chinatown; Sun., Feb. 1. A more twisted but no less tasty sonic mix is promised at Hungry Beat, a new indiepop and northern soul happening. If anyone can pull off a seamless slush of sounds from the Ronettes to the Mo-Dettes, and “sugar pie, honey bunch” to the band]Honeybunch, it’s these DJs: Michael (Part-Time Punks), Brian (Substance), Goodwill (Substance), Marion (squaregirls) and YY (Dublab). Pehrspace, 325 Glendale Blvd., Echo Park; Sat., Jan. 31.
