Kingsley Irons: Rupture

Drawing inspiration from disparate elements that include the reconstructed choreography of Vaslav Nijinsky’s Le Sacre du Printemps, Michel Foucault’s treatise Discipline and Punishment, Kara Walker’s visual art and Lar von Trier’s films Dogville and Manderlay, in her latest, Rupture, choreographer Kingsley Irons weaves a world of shadowy figures, women in birdcages, and paper dolls. Derrick Spiva Jr. provides the original musical score for the opening event in a promising dance series that includes Hysterica Dance Company and Samantha Giron Dance Project in April and concludes with College Dance Theatre in July. Best known for its theatrical productions, this venue has gained a reputation for showcasing significant emerging as well as established local dance companies, and its 2009 season appears to be off to a great start. At the Unknown Theater, 1110 Seward St., Hollywood; Thurs.-Sat., Jan. 8-10 & 15-17; Sun., Jan. 11 & 18, 6 p.m.; $18 in advance, $24 at door. (310) 466-7781 or www.unknowntheater.com.
