Pipe Dreamer

Last week we featured Phyllis Chen at the toy piano. This week it's another Chen, presumably no relation, who'll be delivering fireworks at another keyboard. Young organist Chelsea Chen will set all 6,125 pipes of the Disney Hall organ ablaze with works by Bach, Reger, Dupre, Vierne, Hindemith, Gjielo and, yes, Chen — she's also a composer and has put her popular Taiwan Tableaux on the program. Hailed as "electrifying" and "brilliant," the 24-year-old San Diego native, Juilliard graduate and winner of a roster of prestigious awards is already a global phenomenon who enjoys, in addition to performing, composing and speaking, championing new works that remind us that the organ, that most traditional of instruments, can be really cool, too. Walt Disney Hall Concert Hall; Sun., Nov. 23, 7:30 p.m.; preceded by an Upbeat Live talk by conductor & Caltech music historian Tom Neenan at 6:30 p.m.; $24-$49. (323) 850-2000, www.laphil.com.
Sun., Nov. 23, 7:30 p.m., 2008
