Jorge Mester and the Pasadena Symphony kick off the new season with a rollicking evening of Mexican classical repertoire. There’s mariachi master Jeff Nevin’s Concerto for Mariachi and Orchestra (1994), a.k.a. Pasion Mexicana, a blaring, sensuous joyride that set staid musical tongues wagging at UC San Diego when Nevin, then a composition student under Chinary Ung, wrote the work as his doctoral dissertation. There’s Carlos Chavez’s irrepressible Sinfonia India (1935), a driving, percussive tribute to his indigenous heritage. And rounding out the fun, Silvestre Revueltas’ exhilarating La Noche de los Mayas. Pasadena Civic Auditorium; Sat., Oct. 18, 7:30 p.m.; $20-$60. (626) 793-7172.
Sat., Oct. 18, 7:30 p.m., 2008
