Fresh Moves at Highways' Fourth Annual Latino New Works Festival

Leo Garcia is best known for providing grand vision and aesthetic overview as artistic director of Highways Performance Space, but this weekend, he dons the detail-oriented hat of curator, assembling solo Latino artists and independent performance and dance troupes for this fourth annual showcase. The festival features three different programs, the first two nights punctuated by dance offerings. On Friday night, Mexican-born Jose Luis Reynoso presents Des/Cons-Truccion del Cuerpo In/Civilizado (De/Cons-Truction of the In/Civilized Body). Saturday spotlights two distinct choreographic styles. Gustavo Caldas draws from modern dance, ballet and Brazilian rhythms, particularly the dance-drenched martial art form capoeira. By contrast, Emeka M. Simmons performed throughout Mexico, Cuba and Puerto Rico, soaking up those influences before founding his pan-African performance art ensemble, L’Esprit d’Afrique. For a complete festival lineup, go to www.highwaysperformance.org. Highways Performance Space, 1651 18th St., Santa Monica; Fri.-Sat., Oct. 10-11, 8:30 p.m.; $20, $15 students & seniors.
