When, in the overcrowded, supercompetitive world of chamber music, a string quartet gets special mention, that’s something. But when that quartet gets called “simply the best there is,” by no less than the Boston Globe, ya gotta take notice. The Fab Four — violinists Nicholas Kitchen and Kristopher Tong, violist Mai Motobuchi and cellist Yeesun Kim — are known for their multidimensional gifts, which include, in addition to the expected superlative technique, infectious passion, humor and a brilliantly insightful approach that makes every work sound new. This week in Cerritos, they’ll perform fugues from Bach’s Well-Tempered Clavier; Beethoven’s Quartet in C-sharp minor, Op. 131 and Grosse Fugue in B-flat major, Op. 133; and Shostakovich’s Quartet No. 8 in C minor, Op. 110.
