I have a question for all the Family Values zealots out there, especially morons like Dobson, Mr. Focus on the family. What do you people have against condoms and birth control. I realize you think abortion is murder, which I disagree with, but if the McCain Palin ticket is successful on overturning Roe Vs. Wade, that is exactly what you are going to have. Palin's daughter was just plain stupid not to use protection. Trust me, they are only going to get married, because if they don't it will make their Caribou Barbie mom look bad. There's nowhere to run Bristol, lookout from above, your mom might be up in a helicopter with her 12 gauge shot gun, where she likes to shoot moose and god knows what other living things just minding their own business. There's a way to prevent abortion, and you can get them at any drugstore. CONDOMS! Good Lord, USE THEM! We have enough unwanted children in this world, if you don't want one, don't make one! Every Hollywood movie is filled with sex. Every commercial is filled with sexual conotations, and who can blame kids for wanting what they've been brainwashed to go after. Sex sells everything, but parents who don't teach their kids about birthcontrol should be required to adopt the millions of orphans out there who because their parents can't handle taking care of them, end up in gangs or worse, dumpsters. Sarah Palin is full of crap, a hypocrite, and God help us all if those two idiots get elected. Why don't you ever see any ads for condoms on television? It's always the latest sex cream, lubricant, or more videos by rap artists talking about how much they're gettin. And Palin is talking about abstinence. Get your head out of your ass, lady, and look at your daughter. She looks like a deer caught in the headlights whenever I see her on T.V. Her husband is a milquetoast who does what he's told. First he was a fisherman, then he worked on the oilrigs, then he was a snowmobiler. Oh Boy! How impressive. Whenever I've seen him he looks like he wants as far away from that ballbuster wife of his as he can get. OOps. Too late now, buddy. As for the abortion issue. It will be back to the 50's when they were performed in a filthy hotel room with a coathanger, or down in T.J. where you just hoped you didn't die from an infection. Thanks Mr. Cooper. I've been reading you for years, and you have many many fans. Your letter to your daughter was a gem. Bless you. Keep up the good work.

I'm laughing out loud at work, again... but I'm keeping it to a stage whisper. I reach the end of the article and glance up to see the author's name... and it's you, again, Marc.
I have simply got to subscribe to LA Weekly, and... if you've written any, I must scour Amazon, Borders, and Half.com for copies of your book(s).
If laughter is, indeed, the best medicine, I will be the fittest, healthiest and happiest I've ever been, in a matter of days.
Oh, to see your articles in national syndication! Are they? If so, forgive me for having lived under a rock all these years. If not... who's your literary agent? I need to make a call...

What an idiot you are, Mr. Marc Cooper. A good writer would've lured his readers into his tepid- water prose and then turned up the heat, ala boiled toad. Instead, you chose to whack them over the head with bat full bias in the very first paragraph. I read no further.
-
Tim 09/12/2008 12:51:00 AM
If you don't think the American people aren't stupid enough to vote for her, you haven't been paying attention. One brain surgeon in this comments sections said "She has more executive experience than all the candidates combined".
This would be hilarious if it weren't so pathetic. Love them or hate them, managing a campaign of the magnitude that Obama or McCain have is far more impressive than running a tiny cow town into debt or running a state with less people than the city of Fresno.
But facts don't matter. My cynicism teaches me that at least half of this country votes plain stupid and will justify themselves over and over again.
McCain chose politics over country. We'll see if voters are able to smell the coffee.

Most Amused 09/10/2008 2:01:00 AM
I find all of this quite entertaining. However, the most entertaining part is how all of the liberal Democrats have gotten their panties in a bunch over this woman. Ever since she stepped into the picture and stole the fire away from that other "trick and pony" show called the DNC, it's been attack, attack, attack. Relax, lefties. We're talking about the position of vice president here, folks -- not supreme dictator. You are all peeing in your pants as if she would ever have the power to restructure all government policy. The last I checked we have a system of checks and balances, and the House and Senate are currently controlled by the Democrats. Stop whining so much about what you think is wrong with Sara Palin and spend more time trying to seel what is so "wonderful" about Barack Obama (a.k.a. The Messiah or The Second Coming). So far, all I've heard out of him is a lot old-time, feel-good, idealistic, populist rhetoric (aka BS) that has little or no substance to it whatsoever. He's got the same old tired spiel that the Democrats have been trying to sell for the past 40 years. They always promise the world and then deliver nothing. Then to boot, instead of using his head to win some of the more moderate states/voters, he picks as his VP nominee an elitist liberal Easterner who's been in the Senate way past his prime. Therefore, if he gets his ass kicked in November, it should be no surprise to all of the liberals that he didn't get more support from the "common folk" from places like Nebraska, Kansas, and Texas.

Heres another story about Sarah Palins association with the AIP (Alaskan Independence Party) http://www.latimes.com/news/politics/la-na-aip3-2008sep03,0,6399468.story . The previous writer is correct; Sarah Palin has never been a member of the AIP. Her husband was a member of the party for seven years, but, as we have all recently learned, families are off-limits. (NOT! Her unmarried teen daughters pregnancy is a fair example of why people, like Sarah Palin, who insist on imposing abstinence only birth-control education policies on the public should revisit this policy.) Michael Finnigan, in his LA Times piece reports this quote, Keep up the good work, Sarah Palin told members of the Alaskan Independence Party in a videotaped speech to their convention six months ago in Fairbanks. And he has the tape link in his article, because, as any good reporter knows, statements need to be backed up with verifiable facts. If Mr. Cooper is correct in his predictions that Sarah Palin will be dropped from the Republican ticket, she may at least seek solace in the hope that she may one day be the president of the newly formed country of Alaska!
-
Greg 09/08/2008 9:57:00 AM
The writer is entitled to his wild rant of opinions, but he is not entitled to his own facts. The New York Times report that Palin was a member of an organization advocating session from the US, was false. The source has admitted the error. By this point in life, the writer ought to know that using the New York Times as a source is a problem in and of itself.
-
Leslie 09/08/2008 1:55:00 AM
Cooper writes, "I can't imagine Palin surviving into and through the scheduled October 2 debate with Joe Biden." Imagine it, Mr. Cooper. The U.S. has been engaged in a war with Iraq that should never have been save for an administration whose supporters were vested in a company that would benefit phenomenally from that war. That war has severely damaged our country in so many ways. The decline of our economy from eight years ago to now is absolutely staggering. With this history, the race for the White House should be a slam-dunk for the democrats. But hear comes Sarah Palin. Does her supreme confidence, self-righteous smugness and her history of decision-making that comes straight from a fundamentalist evangelical Christian "gut" seem familiar to you? Being Republican apparently means never having to say your sorry for dragging this country through the mud. God help us, because after viewing the reaction to Sarah Palin's speech at the Republican convention, I truly believe that we should brace for another 4-years of arrogance, willful ignorance and decline.
-

I totally disagree. Facts are facts and McCain is a leader, a REAL flesh and blood American! Who has done everything to serve his country and more!
I cannot get passed a president with the name OBAMA - so close to OSAMA, I mean COME ON!!
What the heck... did you not see what everyone else saw...Sarah Palin kicks ass and the facts show that noone can kick McCains ass so, get over it, it's gonna happen....McCain/Palin will win. Because the Republican women will make sure of it! AMEN

Mary 09/07/2008 5:14:00 AM
I don't think the Bristol thing SHOULD be laid to rest - here's why:
I like to hear James Dobson defend/justify fornication.
Her national debut was all about Sarah and her beautiful family - most
decidedly NOT Sarah the foreign or domestic policy expert - the repubs
were all about playing up her family and her "family values" when it
suited them but now suddenly it's off limits?
Most importantly, the 2008 Republican Party platform contains the
following verbiage: "We renew our call for replacing “family planning”
programs for teens with increased funding for abstinence education,
which teaches abstinence until marriage as the responsible and expected
standard of behavior. Abstinence from sexual activity is the only
protection that is 100 percent effective against out-of-wedlock
pregnancies and sexually transmitted diseases, including HIV/AIDS when
transmitted sexually. We oppose school-based clinics that provide
referrals, counseling, and related services for abortion and
contraception." Okay, time to get real here - abstinence-only sex ed
has been proven to be an abject failure. There's not even any serious
argument on that that I'm aware of. So why SHOULDN'T Bristol be the
poster child for why it is a failure - or at the very least be the cause
of a serious dialog on the subject? The Repubs have gotten a pass on
their peddling this "family values" nonsense for too long now. It is
quite simply pandering to the religious fringe in open defiance of facts
- and we've let them get away with it for too long. The politicians on
our side are positively craven about anything to do with the family
values horseshit being pushed by the other side, and I am almost as
disgusted with them on this as I am with the Repubs. Here's the bottom
line: Little Bristol will marry little Levi and they'll have their
little child and all will end up okay. Why? because they're rich and
white. Now contrast Little Bristol with literally hundreds of kids
every day who are in her position but are a little (okay - alot) less
well off. What is their future? Their future is pretty much in the
toilet. And at least some of this could be prevented by an enlightened
policy of sex education - but no - we all have to pay (literally,
actually) so the Repubs can throw some red meat to their looney
Christian fringe. Make 'em squirm a little on this I say - god knows
they should.
Third, (and I am still not sure I want to press this - it means stooping
to a level I abhor) imagine if the shoe were on the other foot on this -
How do you think the right wing pundits and talking heads would react?
Leave off poor little Bristol? Shit, that bozo Rush practically had a
franchise going in ugly-Chelsea jokes. The repubs - the very same
repubs who ridiculed Chelsea and excoriated Hillary long before she ever
decided to run for public office, the very same repubs who allowed Kerry
to be "swift-boated" when they KNEW it was all BS, made all sorts of
snarky comments about Kerry's wife Teresa Heinz (gawd, she even spoke
French - how un-American is that?), and have generally dragged American
political discourse through heretofore unplumbed and for the most part
unimaginable depths of mud and slime over the last say 20 years - these
repubs NOW want us to respect someone's privacy? This is a level of
hypocrisy that I find truly staggering.
I REALLY like to hear James Dobson defending/justifying fornication.
When she was governor, to her everlasting credit she never pushed any of
that family-values horseshit on us, and for that reason I would have given
her a pass on poor little Bristol were we just talking about Sarah the
governor. But now that she's running for national office we're in an
entirely different game with an entirely different set of rules.

As usual, Mr. Cooper has vented his spleen. What's really great about the latest Cooper column is how it reveals him to be the virulent anti-communist in hiding who had to wait until politics in the U.S.A. swung far to the right before he could openly come out and bash, bash, bash the communists over an obscure chapter in history, prior to WWII. How he stretched the analogy to supposedly give advice to the Republicans isn't clear. And what's Cooper doing giving advice to Republicans? Is he in the closet again? Why do we need Cooper's wham, bam, thank you ma'am "summary" of the Hitler-Stalin "pact" when it's time for all good Americans (some of whom are headed in the direction of Good Germans) to wake up and really learn history?
"Secrets of the Second World War."
http://leninist.biz/en/1972/SSWW277/index.html
Here's what Cooper is * REALLY * against:

Long live... Marc Cooper? Yes! That about sums up the reign of the Cooper column!!

Hey anon from Rockville: McCain has had one incidence of melanoma, and no recurrence following his surgery eight years ago for it. Whoever your empty family doctor friend is, tell him to go back and learn a little basic oncology. Eight cancer-free years is a very good prognosis for someone who's had this disease.
-
anon 09/06/2008 3:57:00 AM
My left-wing Jewish Bohemian M.D. psychiatrist was really eager to discuss Gov. Palin at our last session. He had obviously been thinking about her a lot.
I thought there was something wrong with me for having been thinking about her, plus a distraction from work. But he seemed just as much preoccupied with her. Although he is basically retired so it's really not a problem for him.
"Is anyone a Republican anymore?" he said. Well, yes.
He volunteered that she had flown from Texas to Alaska after her water broke because she was trying to kill the Down syndrome baby she was carrying. He seemed quite sure of this, like that's what all physicians are saying.
I realize now this has been suggested elsewhere online.
It gets a pretty outraged awful reaction. That's the thing about online, it gets ugly like a Roman Coliseum.
In all honesty my shrink talks to me more like a friend than a patient and we often converse about literature and movies, movies being his favorite. He has written a lot about representation of shrinks in filmed art and fiction.
(He knows all the minor works of Nathanial West.)
I told him recently that people write poetry because they can't write fiction. He laughed and said his friends who write poetry wouldn't agree.
We once had a good laugh about the German shrink with the beard in "Mr. Deeds Goes to Town". He pointed out that although the shrink was funny and seemed friendly, he was all for sending Gary Cooper to the nuthouse. I'd missed that, having been interested in the shrink's assertion that Mr. Deed had to go because he was manic depressive. (I was hooked by his "manic depressive" chart.)
A friend, who is also a physician (family practitioner), insists that McCain will not live four more years because of all the melanoma recurrences. He said it like that's what every physician is saying about McCain.
In general I don't like doctors but some are okay, right?
-
DexP 09/05/2008 9:11:00 AM
Interesting take, Marc Cooper. You obviously have strong feelings about Palin's appointment, and I salute that. Passion is good. However, you seem to be forgetting that most news consumers today desire to be told what to think and change opinions on a dime when a more compelling message is received. So don't get angry, dear writer--get to the bottom of the message and keep writing about real stuff that matters to real people (a.ka.a your readers) in this election. I'm not a McCain-Palin supporter, but not even Obama passes that taste test. I still don't know what his plans are. So, now is not a time to be distracted by the news that's spinning everybody else. We sure as hell need some writers who know the facts--not just capable of reacting strongly, if you know what I'm saying ;) Dig deeper.

Old White Woman 09/05/2008 12:43:00 AM
Sarah Palin is very scary! She is an Evangelical Christain, more like Bush than Macain. She wants to outlaw Roe V Wade and set womens rights back to the dark ages. We can see how well her belief in abstenance, as opposed to sex ed for teens, has worked for her pregnant daughter. She thinks God wanted the Iraq war. Sound familiar? The right is counting on women identifying with her and family, and men loving her because she is pretty. Please use your vote to stop this disaster!

That's quite the shot of venom. Careful there comrade, the CPUSA comparison is null since Obama's own mentor was CPUSA member Frank Marshall Davis. As for Palin's daughter, Obama said the kids are "off limits." Maybe we can respect that? I'm glad to see people asking hard questions of the candidates, as they ALL need to be put to task to answer 2 things: integrity for the oval office, and strength under fire.
What the writer and bloggers may be forgetting here is that the contest for those running is about getting ELECTED. I for one don't vote on what they say on the trail, but what they vote. I'm still very concerned that Obama has voted a majority of times as "present" in Illinois. He also admitted that he wasn't qualified for this race-- http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5BnLozS-TnM&feature=related
I'm concerned about that too.
As for Palin, she's has more executive experience than all the candidates put together, and isn't tainted by the ol' DC boys club. But I still need to know more facts concerning her flop on the bridge to nowhere. In the coming weeks I'd love to see more facts rather than rants.
-

Argonoss, if Palin's speech "fell flatter than a moose shot through the head by a high powered rifle," why bother writing a 1000-word essay in the comments section of an laweekly.com article in response to it?

Free Thinker?! The speech was written for her as a script is for an actor........Its amazing how one candidate is ridiculed for not having "enough experience" and another is praised that has far less and lives in the middle of nowhere.
To think freely is examine without bias ALL the facts not what serves your purpose, good, bad, or indifferent. Don't condemn and not think you shouldn't be treated the same. Don't say one is not qualified for having little experience and praise the other for having less than 2-3 years of experience and is under investigation for ethics. Don't say its okay to be a hypocrite because its someone you like or can speak well from a pre-written speech provided by EXPERIENCED writers.
No wonder the USA continues to be a joke to the rest of the world.

Argonoss 09/04/2008 12:33:00 PM
My first impressions of Palins speech:
What is this the brady bunch ?
Palins speech fell flatter than a moose shot through the head by a high powered rifle.
Why isnt someone like Condi Rice giving this speech (or any other infinitely better qualified GOP official) ?
Palins a VP candidate , this is not the time to say hi to all her kids and hubby likes its some PTA meeting. Sure she is selling herself to other soccer and hockey moms, with her folksy and genial language sure Palins personable and likeable but a VP ? I dont think so. John Mccain is 72 , a four time cancer survivor and Palin one flickering heart beat way from being the most powerful leader in history. Would you trust her with the codes to Americas nuclear arsenal ? Her story mentions the bridge to nowhere , something it has been shown that she supported , only flip flopping once congress pulled that project from under her (she kept the money though). Speaking of earmarks isnt Palin the earmark queen, stating that earmarks are essential to Alaskas fiscal budget ? Youre a liar its ironic that Mccains own report on irresponsible Congress earmark spending mentions you by name no less than three times.
Her narrative speaks of being a small town mayor then becoming governor with a population so small its behind 16 cities .. Narratives dont win elections - policies do and what where her polices ? Attack Obama all you want hes got over 18 million votes and was got his credibility to be president by beating the most well funded and formidable party nomination race in US History.
Well.lets see.
They have two policies:
1. Attack Obama as Moses. I think they forget that with the albatross that is George W Bush that its their ticket which is praying for a miracle, and in all probability NEEDS divine intervention to win in Novemeber. The speech was littered with religious allegory , words such as prayer , God , good , evil did Palin think she was at church, I mean the last time I checked The United States Government is secular , and that state and church are kept separate for good reasons. Attacking Obama is a great way to hide the fact the Republicans have no polices other than what Bush laid out earlier and look where that got America.
2. John Mccain is a WAR HERO !!! He has CHARACTER !!! Nevermind hes anti-union, against pro choice, against the environment, pro big business and like a true political hack Palin repeatedly used the words such as Terrorists and Taxes like classical conditioning to terrorise voters to vote republican. I have some news for you Were not that gullible or stupid.
Hmm character, what does it says about a man who picked an unvetted VP because of a panic knee jerk reaction ?
The problem is Bush Mccain Mccain-Palin represents the slash and burn mentality of the 19th centuary, she doesnt support renewables or alternatives shes pro big oil and will remain so. Drilling is a short term measure, just like Mccains decision for her as VP is a short term gain for certain demographics.
Mccain-Palin are for perpetual war, shes pro torture When she spoke of defending thr rights of terrorist she really meant defending things like Abhu graib and waterboarding, wasnt it Abrahma Lincoln who said that torture leads to the ruin of a a nation ?
Palin decries that its unfair that democrats have the audacity to ask how she can juggle a family and be VP. The thing is Bush Mccain Mccain-Palin is against women even having control over their own bodies !!!! What A HYPOCRITE !!
Lastly, Bush , with all his faults, never was affiliated with a party whose chief policy is cessation from the Union.

No one is slamming Bristol Palin for getting pregnant - but we have every right to slam her mother for touting herself as a so-called "family values" advocate who is against sex ed, contraception, and the right to choose whether or not to reproduce, but who can't keep her underage child from getting pregnant. There's a word for Sarah Palin: hypocrite. When the Christian Taliban tries so hard to get into each and every one of our bedrooms, families and doctor's offices, they make their own family decisions (and failures) open to the same criticism.
Also, if she can't control her own children, how can she be an effective second in command of the United States?
Sarah Palin is a bad joke.

Leave Palin's daughter alone. It is too hard to be a pregnant teen and have the entire nation criticize and make fun of you. Children are not mistakes. She is pregnant and having the child. Why does this concern us? Bristol Palin is not running for Vice President; her mom is. I recall certain rowdy behavior from the Bush daughters.
Let's not make this a circus. When it's all over, regardless of the political outcome- Bristol will still be a young girl who is pregnant. The emotional stigma that comes from all this bs can be too much. Do you want to be responsible for that?
