Blow Up L.A. Turns Two

Local club kids who like wack(y) electro pop are probably already familiar with Wallpaper. S.F. Weekly’s “best party band” swathed Cinespace Tuesday, Filter’s Coachella party and the last Check Yo Ponytail with their voice-box-driven dance silliness when they last came to L.A. — and they obviously know what’s up when it comes to our hip-kid hangouts, because this week they pop up everywhere else. If you like the ironic robot-jams of Chromeo, etc. and think mustaches and shades at night are “dope,” you’ll definitely crush on these guys ... if ya don’t, you probably won’t, though we think they groove even when they make us giggle — which is probably the point. Witty ditties like “Txt Me Yr Love” and “T-Rex” (the title track to their current Eenie Meenie Records EP) are tailor-made for the trendsters who terrorize Club Moscow, Dance Right and Blow-Up LA, the last of which is our main pick this week, since it also happens to be the club night’s two-year anniversary. An S.F. transplant herself, Blow Up hostess Anne Lee has managed to keep her monthly dance bash going, with stellar DJ lineups and a circuslike underground feel that includes Shadowscene photo fun, vendors, visuals and the requisite photobooth action (Polite in Public will be in the house this week).
