Enough of the if it wasn't for this immigrant he'd be alive. How do you know that? If this kid was walking from the Beverly Center to his house wearing Blood colors and a bealt saying 20's on it, that means he has to walk through about 100 different gang neighborhoods...not to mention that he attends a high school with bloods and crips and latino gangs. If he was a gang banger (which he was) he probably would have met the same end to his life. He was a closet gang banger and died for it. It happens through black on black, brown on black, black on brown and brown on brown.

Very irresponsible "yellow" journalism. A very intelligent, well-rasied young man was murdered by an illegal alien felon. That is what happened here. The people who sign in to Jamiel's web page probably don't even know him. So what if kids flash gang signs on the sidewalk where Jamiel was gunned down?
You have absolutely no firm evidence Jamiel was a member of the crip's yet you seem to assume this. I do not comprehend your way of thinking, and from a common hard-working American like myself, I find this frightening.
I wrote for my high school paper in the seventies. We were taught to stick to the facts, and not to appy value judgements to a story.
You are an un-American SOB. How else can one rationalize someone who stands up for an illegal alien killer. If I knew what you looked like, and saw you on the street, I would kick you ass.

Derek Manning or Jenny however you call your sick self,
It takes a terrible person like you to play the race card as you are white and obviously reep satisfaction in a Brother's tragedy. Najee Ali worked hard for causes we all believe in. You need help with your minister for your hatred and to find God. I referr you to this
http://www.eurweb.com/story/eur46540.cfm
Mr. Ali has been such a visible (and viable) force in the community for quite some time now. Someone who was apparently aiming to make amends for past mistakes by spending his time not with family and friends; but outside of courtrooms, in neighborhood parks and on street corners bringing awareness to acts of victimization and injustice. This is not a sought-after role to play, so I am not surprised that he has made so many enemies.

It sure is a sign of the disrespect, the racism and slave owner mentality of Ms. Stark, as well as her desperation to denigrate the innocent young man who was shot to death while walking home from school. A young man who had good grades, and was being recruited by colleges, as somehow being a gang member.
Everyone knows that the attorney for the city that was supposed to be prosecuting the case threatened the Shaws, because her real interest lay in preserving the corrupt status quo in place.
Of course, for Ms. Stark, the murderer is only "alleged" but young Jamiel Shaw needs to be reduced to "guilty" so as to excuse his being slaughtered by a hardened criminal, illegal alien. Ms. Stark's real concern is for her ability to have cheap help, as while she feels it's her right to be paid a decent wage, poor citizens, who are black, brown and white, do not merit the same right. She prefers to cheat citizen workers so she can purchase extra luxuries.
The fact that working poor, and among them long term unemployed and underemployed American citizens are discriminated against because they are citizens, become homeless, their children suffer, is inconvenient to her agenda.
Ms. Stark, while you sit on your pampered posterior, resenting the fact that citizens have civil rights, and human rights considerationss well, Mr. Shaw sr. has beeng trying to help his younger son deal with unmeasurable grief, as well as find a way to come to terms with something no parent should ever have to deal with. The mother was serving this country in Iraq, unlike you, she actually believes in rights and freedoms.. she doesn't render them cheap, the way you do. That family walks the walk each and every day, while you.. well, you talk out of both sides of your face.
You and LA Weekly ought to be ashamed of yourselves.. you are not worthy to even claim to represent journalism. You owe the Shaw family, and most especially young Jamiel's memory an honest heartfelt apology. Too bad you lack the capacity for humanity that would bring you to actually do just that.
You can not make the demand for Jamiel's Law to go away, it never will. You couldn't even begin to slander the memory of that young man, it's plainly apparent that you lack any kind of decency or compassion.

If Jamiel Shaw was a blood he should have known the danger he was in that's what happen when you are a gangmember you become a target but this. killing wasnt racial. But the Cheryl Green in Harbor Gateway was, this is happing alot now in L.A these gangmembers are preying on innocent people. These latino and black activist need to address this issue and stop using the gang excuse stop being afraid to fight these gangbanging scum.
-
mike 07/01/2008 9:15:00 AM
i guess jamiel was one of those gang members that doesn't carry a weapon (knife, gun, etc.), has no criminal record, is in no gang database, is doing good in school, is STILL in school, is living with a good father and mother, etc., etc.
or maybe, retractors can't find a way to rationalize the truth so they come up with their own version of events.
jamiel shaw was shot by a gang member that wasn't even supposed to be in this country. that's it.

Understandably, this has become an emotionally charged issue on all sides, as evidenced by yesterday's march through Los Angeles in support of Jamiel's Law (see above URL). Streetgangs.com has added an online voting feature for readers to express their views about what they believe is the motive for Jamiel Shaw Jr.'s murder.

Exhibits brought in by the prosecutor did show that Jamiel was claiming Rollin 20s Bloods, which were the red belt, graffiti of 20s on the belt, graffiti of "Duece Wild," Jamiel's gang name and blood photos from his iPod. Although the defense highlighted it, it was the prosecution's evidence. Also prosecution witness Officer Winston Lee of the LAPD stated that the hand sign Jamiel was throwing was "Neighborhood Bloods." He also testified that the R20s Bloods were at war with 18th Street, Espinoza'a gang.

When I think of this case, I am reminded of the Cypress Park murder of a child riding in the back seat of a car that was driven by a man who "made a wrong turn." Many say he was looking for drugs. Sometimes i wonder if using these incidents to promote political causes is worth considering. I also am rinded that Bernard Parks niece was murdered in a drive through food restuarant because she was a gang member. Rumors are sometime factual.

Dave 06/14/2008 12:59:00 AM
Grandstanding by everyone here.
Plain and simple, this is a gang related murder. Just happens to be a Latino gang vs. a Black gang.
If the 18st member killed a rival Latino, there would be no uproar.
If Jamiel's mother wasn't a solier in Iraq, the media wouldn't have blown this "regular" L.A. gang murder as something special.
Everyone needs to get off their podiums here and look at this objectively.
This is just another L.A. gang homicide. Another senseless loss of life (RIP Jamiel, gangmember or football player, you are still just a kid...we all make mistakes as kids), committed by another youth who will lose his freedom/life to the system.
The forces that create gangs and help gangs to flourish, will never be addressed with everyone using this as their own personal tirade/agenda.
There is no solutions being thrown here, none for immigration, none for black/brown relations, and most importantly...it is not bringing the Shaw's son back to life nor stop any future killings.
People need to stop waiting til it reaches their doorsteps, because it's our community/society that is suffering.

how stupid can these people be? it's the same stupidity that lets them be in denial about WHY their son was killed-- it's the common "Not my Kid," syndrome. every time a gang member gets killed, the grieving parent is blasted all over TV news, "no, no, my son was not in a gang, he was a good boy!"
BOO HOO...hate to break it to you all but illegal immigrants don't give a crap enough to kill someone just cuz they are black-- this was a gang on gang issue, plain and simple.
Peace sign, Mork & Mindy...STAR TREK?!? yea, i know those too, plenty of people do-- but you don't see people over & over in pictures rocking these signs, DO YA?? WAKE UP-- for crying out loud-- WAKE UP!
and this other moron...even if they claim to be Bloods, they all have jobs.." WTF?!?! what, gangsters can't have jobs...hmm...ok...maybe another field of work where he's not a pollyanna interventionist would suit him better...hey...pal, how about you leave the work to someone who knows that they are talking about...?!?
bottom line, what we need to do is not create havoc to start legislation to protect one gang member over another...what we need to do is have legislation in place to target ALL gang members-- useless roaches of society-- and i mean ALL-- Black, Latino, Green, White, Purple, whatever...if you do it...you should pay-- if you're stupid enough claim it..then hey, that's too bad, maybe you should look to emulate something GOOD in life, no?
PEACE OUT-- *throws up REAL peace sign*

This is one of La Raza's best dreams come true. Americans fighting over whether a gang victim murdered by illegal thug-trash, was himself in some way associated with gangs. He was NOT. But growing up in the ghetto, he couldn't help but have a few friends who were. What crimes did Jamiel Shaw commit? NONE. As for the so-called Black leadership in LA, I wouldn't give you 2 cents for it. The Najee Alis have lost all credibility and should bow out. Their "leadership" is not required. REPEAL SPECIAL ORDER 40 NOW.

One Troubled Mom 06/10/2008 9:57:00 PM
I find this entire story troubling and, frankly, disgusting. First, we saw Jamiel making gang signs and threats. Now, it's the gang bandanna. When will the next show drop and what dangerous thing will it be, a gun? I think many parents are afraid to ask. But I don't care what legislation, or who's political career, is at stake. This is disgusting, unacceptable, thug banger behavior. It sends the wrong message to little children for adults to excuse it and the dumb cover up gets more preposterous each day. Wake up, Parents. Jamiel wasn't "a child". And America isn't in Iraq "protecting children". I don't care that the Mom is a soldier. Any parent who excuses this young man's patently obvious gang banging needs their heads examined. And that goes double for Jamiel's parents. If I were them, I'd think about sending the right message to my young son. Don't join a gang.

It is too bad that this child has become the villian in this violent act. How is it that his mom can leave the country to protect children and left her child here to be protected, he was not protected and now we demonize him. I know lots and lots of kids that flash the gang signs but are not gang members. It's because of the neighborhood that they live in that they do know the signs and they think it's cool. Jamiel reminds me of these kids. I am very disappointed in reading this article and I wish that we would call it for what it is, an illegal killed a citizen whether it be a gang member or not. This illegal activity has got to stop! Too many of our "CITIZENS' have lost lives because of it.

Derek Manning: I have learned a couple of things about you since my last email namely, you are not a NOT an African American South Central resident- you are a WHITE bitter, stupid lady from ARIZONA posing as an advocate for African-Americans and oh yeah- you were FIRED from the City of L.A. after including other things you made many racist remarks and email about BLACKS you stupid racist hypocrite. You would defend a dead gangbanger solely because he is an American, but not a dead victim of crime who is an "illegal alien" because "illegal aliens" are all simply criminals right? Defend a criminal here but not there- got it. Special Order 40 does nothing more then laws that are enforceable exist but to solely target Latinos. Kids of all colors are routinely harassed by the police for hanging around in groups of 2 or more in the "wrong" neighborhood where there is absolutely nothing to do, but under the proposed law, Latino kids would be racially profiled more than they already are. When anyone is arrested, he/she is screened before their release for warrants, child support, and immigration status. Using the LAPD as an immigration Gestapo force would actually cause more crime and unreported crimes. Why don't you get off your lily-white ass from Arizona and do the work that Mr. Ali and others HAVE been doing way before the death of Jamiel Shaw which is trying to stop the violence period? You are a fake and a fraud and you are exposed as being an OUTSIDE AGITATOR! You don't know a goddamned thing about gang violence. Latinos are your scapegoat today just as Blacks have been your scapegoat in the past. You care no more about Blacks than you do Latinos so get off of it already! This is my last email to you regarding this- I have better things to do and apparently you don't MORON MANNING.

ps- "Latinos" (Native-Mexicans) DID pick cotton (as we still do!) as well as were this continents VERY FIRST SLAVES before the importation of African slaves in the early 1600s- 100 years after Mexicans and other indigenous groups had built Americas colonial cities of Mexico City, San Salvador, St. Augustine, San Juan, and many other cities, areas, missions, and plantations in Mexico, U.S., Central/South America, and the Caribbean following the conquest mainly of the Spanish and English. Also, since indigenous peoples of the Americas were plentiful, they were not imported or bought and sold and hence not labeled slaves but forced labor in history books. Get a little educated will you Ms. Moron?

Please call the press for immediate interviews and let them know that you are willing to go on the record that it is "highly unlikely" that Jamiel Shaw was a gangbanger because, drum roll please, you believe it is not true.
I will say you have a point re Jamiel Shaw's killing being 100% preventable. Yes, it was if only his parents would have not allowed their son to be an unabashed gangbanger and thug. There I said it and I didn't blow up and lightning didn't strike me. THE EMPEROR HAS NO CLOTHES.

Again and again and again, I just do not understand how our President and our congress can send our young men and women half way around the world in defense of the United States and refuse to defend our National Borders and Enforce our Immigration Laws while at the same time warning our military, for their own safety, not to wear their uniforms when traveling to "our" southern borders. Now the members of our military can no longer leave their children at home in a "major United States city" and expect them to be safe or a least as safe as the parents in a "combat zone"!!
In the meantime "our" FAMILIES are at the mercy of ILLEGALS and their Anchor Babies being murdered, raped, or robbed. But NOT to worry the Chamber of Commerce will get their "cheap labor", thanks to Bush and the Congressional Leadership, increasing "their privatized" PROFITS!!
-
zeezil 06/08/2008 8:12:00 PM
Assume the worst, which I believe is not true...jamiel was a gangbanger. Even if true (highly unlikely), he was an AMERICAN CITIZEN murdered by an ILLEGAL ALIEN. A crime that was 100% preventable. Jamiel is dead because of Special Order 40 and sanctuary city tolerance for illegal aliens.
Case closed...illegal alien murderer should get the death penalty.

Moron Manning remarks to Najee Ali: "How sad that you are so morally and intelectually bankrupt that you have to smear a promising young man that lost his life. You care only about getting your mug in front of the TV. You, sir, have sold out the African American community in Los Angeles. Shame on you, Uncle Tom." Have you seen the photos of the "promising young man" glorifying violence, killing and gang culture??? Guess not. Sorry but the evidence clearly and convincingly shows Shaw was a gangbanger and was killed for being a gangbanger. Also, just because someone is killed does not mean they get promoted to saint status.
You want to glorify a dead young African American man with promise? Go read about Luisa Prudhomme's son Anthony who wasn't a gangbanger and was murdered. Oh, that's right, you probably can't read about him because racists like you didn't care about his killing as it wasn't tied to a racist piece of garbage legislation.
Come on moron Manning...call me an Uncle Tom. You seem to get off on it...or do you only get off on calling proud black activists like Najee Ali Uncle Toms???
-
"Derek Manning" is a 06/08/2008 8:20:00 AM
Derek Manning--
You have some real issues. First, you are clearly a know nothing racist. You state: "We have seen example after example of Latinos, many of whom are illegally residing in this country, killing blacks." Yeah? And we have seen example after example of crazy Caucasian male serial killers. That's the profile. Though somehow I don't think you believe we should get rid of Caucasians.
The fact is the majority of us are arguably here illegally ... it was the American founding fathers and their European ilk who forcibly took this turf we call America from others here much longer than them and who did their own ethnic cleansing via reservations and small pox infected blankets. Hmmm...sounds just like the ethnic cleansing and turf war you accuse latino gangbangers of.
In any event, Manning you are a moron plain and simple. And then to call Najee Ali an Uncle Tom, well that's just low and and shows you to be the typical racist a-hole who seeks to encourage brown v. black hatred.
Also, please go look up the word "cogent". I don't think you meant to give Najee Ali a compliment when you stated: "Then we have the cogent statement of the the biggest sell-out in Los Angeles, Najee Ali." Just so you know, cogent means "appealing forcibly to the mind or reason". Duh.
But then I wouldn't expect much from the likes of an ignorant racist like you who accuses an African American of hating his own race because he refuses to hate other ethnicities and races.
-
Derek Manning 06/07/2008 7:20:00 PM
Mr. Munoz,
Thank you for that diatribe of racist tripe. Let's get a couple of things historically straight. First, Latinos did not "pick cotton." That was the job of what the job of African slaves. Secondly, my father owned a janitorial company while I was a teenager that I worked for. I also mowed lawns, lugged cinder block, hung dry wall, mucked stalls, and a number of other jobs that have been stolen by foreign nationals illegally residing in this country. Many of these jobs I would do again, namely janitorial, however I will not do them for the wages they currently pay, and this is the phrase that you and your ilk leave off of the incomplete sentence, "Illegals do jobs that Americans won't...."
If you agree, like I and many others do, that illegal immigrants that commit crimes like Pedro Espinosa "allegedly" committed, should be deported, then why won't you support repealing Special Order 40, which has been bastardized to the level that gangs with 80 to 90% illegal immigrants run our streets with impunity? Why does Tony Villaraigosa call a legitimate question during the last Mayoral debate about the 18th Street gang "inflammatory"? Why won't Latino activists realize that Jamiel's Law is needed in order to get illegal aliens that committ violent crime not only off the streets that you claim to want to defend, but out of this country which they had no legal right to be in in the first place?
It seems to me Mr. Munoz, that your pleas are rather disingenuous. Of course this is something that is not surprising, after all you cling to the old "hate Whitey" rhetoric which clearly demonstrates to anyone with half a brain that your arguments are hypocritical.
As for Najee Ali, he is a SELLOUT. He is not a peace activist. If he was he would be standing with the family of a dead African-American boy, and not smearing him.
As for you, Mr. Munoz, you make me sick. Because while you claim that we can't point the finger at Latinos, you have no problem pointing fingers at whites. Sniff, sniff..do you smell your own hypocrisy?
-
Randy Mu 06/07/2008 6:31:00 AM
Mr. Manning- let me first tell you that I am no stranger to gang violence- including Black on Latino violence. I was born in this city- as both my parents, their parents, and THEIR parents. I was raised in the projects of Estrada Courts in Boyle Heights since 1970 when my family was forced to live there when our shack was literally condemned by the city. I have buried MANY friends- not acquaintances but close personal friends over the years behind gangs and drugs so dont' preach to me on how it is in the ghetto. I also think that yes, we have to stop the finger pointing at each other while HONESTLY getting things off our chest in a politically incorrect yet respectful manner. I don't want to hold your hand and sing kumbaya but we need to make the question of race and racism a national debate and not just a two-tone debate and throw us "Latinos" (native-Mexicans) in the mix just to solely discuss immigration. You want our jobs? I'll give you an application for a cotton picker. I know you'll probably be offended by that and you're way too proud to ever be a cotton picker but THAT is exactly what Mexicans do to this day in this country and pick every other crop you can think of as well as stitching that shirt on your back. These immigrants are doing the jobs nobody wants including you Mr. Manning; the jobs you are too proud or lethargic to do. We have a fight on all sides- from Whites, Blacks, other ethnic groups. We have had to fight an actual WAR with the U.S., (a war over the state of Texas that Mexico demanded would not be a slave state!), a revolution in Mexico, mass deportations in the 1930s, the Zoot Suit riots in the summer of 1943 and many more indignations. Mexico also sent military troops into New Orleans to help with hurricane Katrina cleanup and Cuba offered 10,000 medical doctors to help victims which youre conservative President Bush refused! History shows us again and again that when times get tough, people turn on each other especially the poor and disenfranchised who are the BLACK AND LATINO as well as other ethnic groups in this country. We fight like dogs over the scraps of bread while we lose sight of the loaf of bread! I do think that people who immigrate to this country that commit serious crimes should be deported- that's a no-brainer, but to do nothing but point the finger of "Latino ilk" like me as you put it is wrong and you know it. Mr. Ali is not a "sellout", he is a PEACE ACTIVIST and you are another demagogue. We are in the SAME boat and have been for the last 500 years in case you don't know it!
-
Clay McCord 06/07/2008 1:16:00 AM
Look who's suffering b/c of the illegal influx. It's the Black community--their jobs taken, their schools overrun, their ERs closing, etc. Ex gang member Villaraigosa could care less. Maybe "whitey" will care when the bullets start going through THEIR windows.
-
Anthony 06/06/2008 8:03:00 PM
Although it is true that illegals are here illegally, there are plenty of other ethnicities who are here illegally, Irish, Chinese, French, etc. Blaming one group is wrong. Also, people come here illegally because of job opportunities. Until we hammer down on corporations and those that HIRE illegally, humans will try to survive any way they can, even if it means breaking the law. It's instinct. There is NO easy solution to this issue.

You know that you have lost the moral high ground, and like most clueless and inept liberals, you must resort to playing the race card. Until then you and the rest of the Latino and Black political leadership are complicit in the deaths of EVERY SINGLE African-American at the a Latino gang banger illegally residing in this country.
-
Randy Mu 06/06/2008 3:27:00 AM
Mr. Manning, I have met Mr. Ali a few times and he has even been on my show The Peoples Channel a few years ago and the topic was- you guessed it: Black & Brown tensions. Yes, racist Latinos have murdered Blacks and racist Blacks have murdered Latinos but this- THIS was a case of a seasoned "Blood Killer" murdering a closet Blood- Jamiel Shaw Jr.- plain and simple. All the rhetoric will not bring him back or all the other faceless and nameless poor inner city African American AND Latino kids dying every single day on our streets. Instead of pointing fingers at each other- we need to band together and fight gang violence, police violence, drugs, etc. For you to call Mr. Najee Ali a "sellout" or Uncle Tom" is really going out there- Mr. Ali not being Black enough" or "wanting to be Latino" because he is trying to end not only the Black and Brown violence, but the Black on Black and gang violence within the Black community. We have our own "sellouts" (vendidos or "Tio Tomas'" as I refer to them) but I assure you that neither I nor Mr. Ali are one of them. What kind of message are you sending these impressionable kids by calling peace activists like Mr. Ali "sellouts"?? Think man!
-
Najee Ali 06/05/2008 11:55:00 PM
My mistake..I dont support the hate crime & racial statements by the parents. There son was killed in cold blood and did nothing wrong but just walk home. but this is about gangs and not race.
-
Najee Ali 06/05/2008 11:49:00 PM
For anyone to call me an Uncle Tom is hilarious !I love being Black and my race the HUMAN race.I support what Zine is doing but can support the parents & their supporters saying this was a hate crime Jamiel got killed because he claimed to be a blood plain & simple.
-
Derek Manning 06/05/2008 10:20:00 PM
I don't care if Jamiel Shaw identified with gangsters or not. The fact that most inner city kids are familiar with the "thug life" is a testament to hip-hop. I expect Jamiel to know the neighborhood he grew up in. But all of that is immaterial when you realize that his "alleged" murderer should never have been released by the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department.
Randy Munoz calls the act to repeal Special Order 40 ethnic cleansing. Sadly, Mr. Munuz does not realize that ethnic cleansing is done by taking life. We have seen example after example of Latinos, many of whom are illegally residing in this country, killing blacks. The Avenues, Florencia 13 and this latest tragedy. No, Mr. Munoz, the ethnic cleansing has been undertaken by Latino gangbangers trying to protect their turf from African-Americans.
Then we have the cogent statement of the the biggest sell-out in Los Angeles, Najee Ali. This is a man that hates being black so much that he wants to be Latino. He, like the rest of the African-American political "leadership" have sold-out their constituancy, and are the real Uncle Toms.

This was a great article written by Annette Stark ! I agree with the above post by Randy, its a shame that this young man was killed, his killer should be brought to justice but its also a shame that the Shaw family wants to make excuses and are in denial there son was claiming to be a gang member and thats waht got him killed this haad nothing to do with race.Shaw was a Blood that at hus best was a wannabee the other kid that killed him was for real with it.

That Photobucket Link has an incorrect space between "earl" and "5".
Tbis is the working link:

While I sympathize with the death of Jamiel Shaw as anyone should for ALL victims of murder and crime, it is increasingly clear that the proposed law is designed to target ONE ethnic group: Latinos. Its another example of racist-toned Mexican and Central-American undocumented immigrant bashing. Documented Latino-Americans are not immune from being stopped and questioned for having the wrong skin color, or speaking broken or little English. Special Order 40 was originally intended to protect immigrants from both Latino and African-American gangs and criminals who preyed on them since at least the 1970s. Without life saving protections for immigrants and all underserved and voiceless segments of society, serious and violent crimes such as murder, rape, robbery, child abuse and domestic violence would drastically go unreported and just breed more hate and resentment between Blacks and Browns. While the Shaws heart may be in mourning, their emotions and passive and outright racist attitudes towards Latinos as displayed in their Fox11 interview continues to go unchecked and will in no doubt produce much more nameless Jamiels and Joses. A gang member killed a gang member- pure and simple and diversions and shell games aside- we as a community need to concentrate on more resources in preventing and also punishing GANG violence from all sides- not dividing to attack one entire ethnicity. Many Latinos are getting tired of being the scapegoat and Im afraid a draconian clampdown towards them will only lead to serious backlashes. We need to unite to protect us all.
