Paul Salamunovich conducts the USC Thornton Symphony and Choral Artists
Los Angeles has no more beloved choral conductor than the honorable Paul Salamunovich, music director emeritus of the Los Angeles Master Chorale, who “retired” in 2001 to embark upon a schedule as busy as ever. The almost-81-year-old maestro has been conducting all over the world and hosting clinics and workshops around the country, continuing to prove his status as “an American choral treasure.” This week, as a visiting USC Thornton faculty member, he will conduct the Thornton Symphony and Choral Artists in two works that are especially dear to his heart — Maurice Duruflé’s Requiem and Morten Lauridsen’s Lux Aeterna. Salamunovich had a close personal relationship with Duruflé and was instrumental in championing Lauridsen, assuring the latter that his hauntingly exquisite masterpiece would go down in history as a choral classic. Lux Aeterna did just that, and became, in the process, a Los Angeles Master Chorale signature work. Salamunovich is known for his ability to mold choral sound, getting the most out of singers, and his gifts are particularly apparent with these two beautiful works.
