Fresh Rock: American Hip-Hop

Uprock-77

Rocking the riddles, rhythms and visuals full-on old school, Uprock-77 aims to be "a monthly journey into the cultural expression of American hip-hop." Think NYC's late '70s/early '80s street style — boom boxes, Adidas, breakdancing, graff art — and you get the idea. The club's debut certainly has a lineup impressive enough to capture the exhilarating essence of the East Coast retro rap scene while still maintaining a fresh L.A. feel. DJ Numark (Jurassic 5) and the Umoja Soundsystem (DJs Daz, Tomas & Jun) man the decks, and those who've seen them spin know we're not exaggerating when we say these suckas have skillz to behold. I-n-I Soundsystem's Shakespeare hosts, so even though this one's at a gallery (the new Zero One — see this week's Nightranger), expect a house-party atmosphere to go with the street-party sounds. 746 S. Los Angeles St., dwntwn; Sat., Jan. 26, 9 pm-2 am; over 21. $15 donation includes open bar, $10 with RSVP to uprock77@yahoo.com by Jan. 25.
