For it's size, the Eastside Playboys have about 350-400 active members since 2004, but data shows since 1986 there have been 62 murders commited by the Eastside Playboys street gang.

This article is poorly written and filled with questionable statements that you as the original writer should have taken time to see if there was actual facts and truth behind the ignorant statements you made.
For your information San Bernardino city is 45 minutes to an hour outside Los Angeles and has been a community in dispair, anguish, violence and poverty many years before your so called statement of being just another "one of LA's bedroom communities". San Bernardino gangs have fought in coming Los Angeles gangs for years and years, and welcome no outside gangs whatsoever.
The gang culture in SB dates back generations. Next time try to get your facts correct before you write these ignorant statements and ideas out of thin air.

I deplore the anti-black comments found above. One wonders how widespread such attitudes are. I suspect that groups spouting such beliefs will find growing support among frustrated law-abiding folks, just as we see growing support for neo-Nazis in Europe, who are the most visible (if not the only) groups opposing to the growing Muslim immigration with its attendant problems.
If mainstream politics won't address the central issue in people's lives (and the lack of security caused by these groups is central to anyone in contact with them) those people will turn to the fringes.

could hardly believe my eyes. What a directly inciteful and racially
polarizing cover this is: seemingly intended to create fear and
distrust of our black neighbors. What could your intention possibly
be here? I can't think how you could possibly undo this appalling
harm, but could possibly mitigate it by publishing a cover story
about the pervasive, consistent, imbalance of justice and sentencing
as well as exclusion that has been the daily reality of our black
friends, while millions and billions are bilked from citizens by
white collar criminals who go unpunished, or are are minimally

Los Angeles simply has to become involved in shaping its future and not leaving it up to others or out-of-towners. That will not happen.
You need to be in South and East LA or problems spots in the Valley running after-school programs and interventions if you really care.
We've allowed impoverished, racially-isolated ghettos to flourish in skid row and South Angeles, keeping them invisible for too long and we now struggle to understand 'how we let this happen?' In reality, there seems to be no concern, just sensation.
South Los Angeles is simply ignored by the mainstream in Los Angeles and very few above the Pico line knows what it even looks like. It would be nice to read encouraging articles about the people who are running recovery programs on Skid Row or are having success with at-risk youth in L.A.
I've taught in some of LA's most violent gang neighborhoods, and the communities are full of concerned, honest families and great kids doing their best to escape the pressures of gang life and the surrounding violence and chaos.
I don't imagine that any of the readers beating their chests about water-boarding these kids understand what it is to be 12-years old and take the bus home every night to a group of thugs surrounding you and demanding to know where you live and wanting to beat your ass for giving or not giving an answer. I'd probably form a crew or pack a pistol for protection eventually too.
The answer lies in connecting these kids to Los Angeles so they feel part of it, so they feel open to its wealth and opportunities. One of the U.S.' richest cities in its richest state should not be ignoring its future generation--whether it be for class, race or culture issues.
So many bright kids in impoverished neighborhoods tell me they envision a life selling drugs and dying before they're adults. The solution to the gang problem is not torturing these hopeless kids, but giving them alternatives they can thrive in.

You are absolutely right and I really cannot believe some of the things that have been celebrated in the Hip Hop world and other areas of entertainment. Who would have thought that it would suddenly become hip to glorify random murder, using women as sex slaves (�Hos�), etc. When you think about it is really outrageous. Even worse is that the black community had been fighting for so may years to be treated with respect and moral dignity in this country and then you had these amoral people promoting this? How could this have happened? I agree with you the ones supporting this sort of entertainment are every bit as bad and perhaps in many cases worse (as they may have had a more privileged life so they are even without any excuse).
But as far as such media causing problems through emulation and pride in gang life and criminality, it has not just set a bad example for the youth in America. This lifestyle is being glorified and copied by youth around the world - you hear of gangs or rebels in Africa idolizing American rap stars or just the other day I was looking at a picture of Namache bazaar (an area near the base camp of Everest in Nepal) with a Sherpa wearing a Tupak shirt (not that everything Tupak wrote was celebrating gang life but I think you get my point). In a place as isolated as Nepal you have pop rap stars waving American gang hand symbols in their own homegrown rap videos. Amazing! Around the world we have youth emulating this gangster life. It is truly sad!!

Of course it is not all "illegals" committing these crimes but as we already have plenty of our own homegrown gangsters and criminals why not make sure we don't have more coming over? Send those that are illegal residents back to their own home countries as soon as they are caught committing such crimes and for that matter we can also send legal resident immigrants (greencard holders) back (ASAP) if they are caught committing such serious crimes (we already have laws on the books that enable us to do this and they should be followed every time when we are considering such criminality) . I think this is what concerns people. We don�t need to import more criminals - we already have an extremely large criminal problem.

The rise of gang violence in L.A. can be attributed to the trafficking of drugs. That was one of the issues in the Iran/Contra scandal of the 80s. The money to fund the Contras was raised through the sale of drugs here, in the U.S. via Freeway Rick and his association with the CIA. I propose that the CIA step in and clean up the mess that they made. Stop believing that if you're white or if you live in a suburb that the problem won't have an impact on you. It does and your children are attracted to the "lifestyle" that they believe is associated with urban living via television. Plus, if there's money to made from drugs or killing people you will never ever get me to believe that black people love money more than any other race in this country. It is already happening with meth labs in suburbia. To address the other issues raised. No, I don't want these thugs in the U.S. armed forces! Have you lost your mind?! Do you want them to become more proficient assasins and dealers?? My only issue with the article though is that not every African American has a family member who is a part of a gang. I grew up in South Central L.A. and so did my cousins who are a few years older than me. They are a part of the blue collar middle class or have a college education (including me) but none of them have sent their children to the schools that we attended. As a child of the '80's, growing up the L.A area when the gangs were really growing and the violence taking off, I am still astoundend every day by what we are seeing now.
I have been working in Watts for the past ten years with many of the people living in the Nickersons,the J Downs, Pueblos ect...My heart is there being from the neighborhood. It's sad and "we" (those that made it out, went to school, got jobs and know a better way of life) have to do more.

The author should read 'Folk Devils and Moral Panics' by Stanley Cohen, or anything by Stuart Hall to understand the violent youth narrative he is perpetuating. No doubt the gang issue is serious and complex, but whenever I hear MTV & rap music blamed for violence or the claim that it is more dangerous now than it has ever been, I know the author needs some background.

It makes me ashamed of the United States, it makes me want to never set foot in Los Angeles again, and it makes me wish these nihilistic, amoral, violent fools would be wiped out. They are, as parts of the article suggested, terror cells within the United States, and as another part alluded to, rebel armies like one sees in parts of Africa. There is an answer in science for what is happening here. We know that this kind of behavior cannot be fixed. It is a result of a mean intelligence level too low to maintain civil society, and we have created this situation by providing an economic incentive for women of very low ability to have children in the form of ADFC. Ironically, affirmative action has efficiently extracted brigher blacks out of black neighborhoods, leaving none but the least capable behind to victimize each other and anyone unlucky enough to fall in their path.
Blacks commit violent crime on whites approximately forty times more often than the reverse. I refuse to be categorized as the victimizer anymore when I am both the physically victimized group, and the group footing the bill financially for all this failure. Point at another group of people other than white American males who have created laws that deliberately handicap themselves with respect to another group. We are not victimizers, we're practically saints by any real-world measure (which means comparing us to anybody else who actually exists or has existed).
We need to start paying people who have very low ability to NOT have children, to create the opposite pressure that we have been creating for the last fifty plus years. It is a depressing step to have to take, but it's preferable to what we are doing now, which is locking up the majority of the men in a demographic group to keep them from tearing our civilization apart, while simultaneously paying the females to have more kids to live miserable, pointless lives. It is soft-hearted (and soft-headed) "reformers" who have caused this horrible disaster and though they lack the moral and intellectual courage to own that fact, the rest of us need to seize the reigns from them and begin to rectify this problem before it is too late. What we are doing now is unconscionable, and the level of violence and misery that is created simply to avoid disabusing the sensibilities of wealthy liberals is sick beyond words.

These gangs have been at war since the late 60's and early 70's. This new generation is just repeating the cycle and it will continue as long as you keep the projects alive.

Well, look on the bright side; we are spending billions to help the Iraqis. This is what many sociologists call "re-primitivisation" of man. It results from breakdown of (particularly) black society, the breakdown is caused by the realisation that they can never truly integrate into "white" society because they have very low IQ (black average-85). We have to buildmore prisons and incarcerate these people permanently. Congratulations to George Bush, he is the "illegal immigration" president and as such is the man most responsible for the destruction of civilised American society.

I live in a relatively small city in the Northeast, close to Boston.
We now have a gang problem, something that not in our wildest dreams would our city have even thought would happen to us.
Drugs and guns are periodically shown in pictures of our local paper, confiscated by our police force.
I've finally stopped believing that all these criminal people need to do is belong to the Girls and Boys Club and their lives will turn out normal.
What is the saying> a conservative is a liberal who has been mugged.
Well, my city is being mugged and I'm now a conservative.

I left the L.A. area to retire after working 15 years at U.C.L.A. The fellow at the rental place where I got my trailer said for the first time he was seeing more trailers going east than coming west. Good people will continue to evacuate the gang-infested areas until the only ones left are the 'bangers.

This story is very, very sad. Clearly the gang members deserve the blame for what they are doing.
That having been said, however, it seems like a lot of these problems could be fixed by changes in federal policy. (i) The gang members are spreading out of LA due to pressure from Latino immigrants. Could the government be doing anything more to secure the borders? (ii) The gangs are fueled by the drug business. Why not end the war on drugs as Ron Paul has suggested? There was a time when you could buy cocaine over-the-counter in drug stores and there was no such violence. And finally, (iii) I can't help but bring up Gary Webb's much-maligned but never-debunked research showing that the crack epidemic was actually started by the CIA as it sought to find new sources of funding for its dirty business.

They've been busy fighting to REDUCE the penalties for dealing CRACK, and to make the new reduced penalties retroactive, so that 19,500 drug dealers and users can be released early from prison and returned to their communities. You see, this article is shining light on a non-problem. It's not gangs,drugs, or violence that are the problem in the black community. Well the above statement makes this problem sound like a mysterious wind that blows from where no-one knows. Section 8 welfare black relocation programs through the subprime loan market has enabled these people to borrow government back money to move into our neighborhoods. There has never been a communist government that has come into power without a civil war. Never, and the Harvard, Princeton, Kennedy School of Government crowd know that rule. They have excellent educations unlike most of the unwashed masses in America.
This is intentional and it is not the only front American citizens are being attacked from. If one thing doesn't get their desired state of emergency then another will.
It is time for everyone to start paying attention and educate themselves. I suggest reading Tsun Tzu's "Art of War", and "The Prince" by Machiavelli to begin your education in real politik.
