Night of the Living Dead

KPFK is where North Korea meets North Hollywood

Buckle up your hazmat suits and adjust your air mask, as we’re going to take a late summer plunge into the bubbling cesspool of our local “people-powered” radio station, KPFK. Last week, its long-reviled manager, Eva Georgia, announced she’s finally stepping down. It’s a little bit like Nero calling 911 to report some smoke.

During her more than five-year tenure, Georgia has plunged the listener-run station into a dark hole, alienated its staff, pared down its already marginal audience, allowed its signal to decay, and filled the airtime with loonies, ranters and fringies. Tune in to precious drive-time slots and you’re as likely to hear — for the umpteenth time — how the downing of the Twin Towers was an inside job as you are basically open proselytizing by Red-book-thumping adherents of the Maoist Revolutionary Communist Party. Georgia had recently been publicly exposed for riding around in limousines and for checking herself in for days to the posh Universal City Sheraton to oversee fund drives when listeners are guilt-tripped into subscribing to “fiercely independent radio.” (You know, nothing is too good for the leaders of the working class!) The station’s public management meetings are shouting matches for quivering cranks who all but speak in tongues. Race baiting is the most common tactic for argument. Those who believe that al Qaeda and not the CIA struck on 9/11 are branded as government flunkies. Incompetence is rewarded, even celebrated, in the name of diversity and political correctness. Professionalism is derided as elitism. And, oh yes, four feet good, two feet bad!

Not that any of the above made much difference, as Georgia’s bosses — those who run the local station’s board as well as the Pacifica network’s national board — are even loopier and less competent than she is. They’re a crew of slogan-chanting zombies, nary a one with any professional understanding of radio, a clique who bullied themselves into power six years ago after a prolonged campaign of harassing, slandering and defaming the preceding management out of office. Their heavy-handed, brutish tactics cost them more than $400,000 a few years ago after their summary and politically discriminatory firing of former KPFK manager Mark Schubb nearly came to trial.

Which is sort of why his successor, Ms. Georgia, has finally been pushed out the door. The target of two current serious sexual-harassment and workplace-discrimination lawsuits, Georgia could likely cost Pacifica several hundred thousand more in liability. Put this in the context of the network’s chief financial officer stating publicly a few weeks ago that Pacifica’s New York outlet is likely to financially “crash” by the end of this year, and you get the bigger picture.

I’m vaguely sympatheticto the mutiny, a few weeks ago during which a couple of dozen programmers surfaced calling for Georgia’s dismissal, though I think it’s long overdue. Forgive me a pinch of self-righteousness here, but I quit the station (as a paid daily afternoon host) exactly one day after the current crew of zealots took over and fired Schubb in early 2002. It was immediately apparent to me what the new commissars were all about, and I had no intention of continuing my association with them, or raising money for them. Every day since then has been a good day for me, thank you. The problem with a network like Pacifica is that no one likes to give up his airtime, so the default position of most programmers is to go along with the flow, co-exist, and just grin and bear it — no matter how painful and embarrassing. Just grip your ankles tight and try to keep on smilin’ as you keep your lips glued to the mikes. Former manager Schubb laments what he calls an internal culture of “time-slot sluts who will get in bed with anybody just to hear themselves talk on the air.”

Now it looks like some people finally feel just a tad too violated. The current crop of dissenters includes those who still try to produce the few and only respectable shows left on the air — most notably Ian MastersBackground Briefing. Masters has taken the lead in trying to challenge the controlling powers behind the departing Eva Georgia — most notably local board commissars Lydia Brazon and Don White and the head of the network board, Dave Adelson, a guy whose leadership of Pacifica makes FEMA look like FedEx by comparison. Says Masters:

“In effect they are a Politburo presiding over a dysfunctional system where power devolves to the crazies who outlast everyone at meetings. The Politburo controls the crazies by rationing out airtime to cults, cranks and crackpots in the hope that conspiracy and colonic cures sell enough to keep the operation limping along with ever-increasing fund drives. While they claim to be on the left, they are mimicking the religious right, selling the equivalent of the ‘end times’ prophesies. Instead of activating the left, they are paralyzing it, sewing tangled webs of distraction and despair. The occupation of Pacifica by the ‘night of the living dead’ is where the American left has been terminally discredited as North Korea meets North Hollywood.”

Marc Coopers 9/5 slam on radio station KPFK, 980.7 FM, rides on his usual spume of facile sarcasm, which has characterized Mr. Coopers writing for some years. Since he was unceremoniously ushered from his microphone at KPFK in 2002, hard upon the firing of his friend Mark Schubb, the former station manager, it is evident he has held quite a grudge. I expected a dash of bitter sarcasm in service of Mr. Coopers ego and indeed he went the distance. He jumped hard on the only socialist/social-democratic station on the dial with both leaden feet. It is a bubbling cesspool, and the leadership is not merely incompetent, but, quite mad. He shrieks that drive-time is dominated by wild notions (actually accepted by over 50 % of New Yorkers, for instance, polled by the New York Times) that the 9/11 catastrophe was an inside job, and friends of the President are profiting from the war. Staff and crew of KPFK are not the only ones condemned by Mr. Cooper. Listeners do not merely donate to keep this gadfly voice of Pacifica alive, they, according to the pure-minded Mr. Cooper must be guilt-tripped into such an act. Among the signs of Mr. Coopers desperation to resume his long-lost place behind the microphone is his characterization of the leadership as a band of race-baiters. He even gives space to broadcaster Ian Masters to chime in with crew of slogan-chanting zombies. As a matter of fact, fundraising has risen by 40% since Mr. Coopers departure, with Amy Goodmans Democracy Now! leading the way. Someone at KPFK is doing something right. More to the point, one should not dismiss the political nature of the ax Mr. Cooper is grinding in his latest defamatory attack on KPFK and the entire Pacifica enterprise. Eerily paralleling that of Christopher Hitchens, frankly, none of Mr. Coopers attacks on the anti-war movement or what he term the left should surprise the politically aware. Both have been at it for many years. And, since he speaks of the undead, why not revive his banished chum, Mark Schubb, the former station manager, who sinks even lower to label the broadcasters as time-slot sluts. No envy there. Now, may I reveal a more personal motivation behind Mr. Schubbs and Mr. Coopers stated reasons for this assault? Mr. Schubbs lips were unceremoniously plucked from his mike when he overplayed his hand. In a power grab of consummate blindness he cut Amy Goodmans Democracy Now! off the air. The public reason: He objected to her unvarnished delivery of the visceral truth of the broomstick sodemy perpetrated upon an African emigrant man, Abner Doulima, by the NYPD in a station house. Ms. Goodmans program is the flagship of Pacifica and is beloved by the listeners. Many tuned in on the clumsy early internet audio in defiance. Mr. Schubbs days as station manager were numbered. I attended a mass meeting called to deal with the crisis, Amy Goodman attending. She patiently waited to speak with Mr. Schubb on the dias of an 8th Street church near downtown Los Angeles. He briefly appeared with a phalanx of about ten or so supporters, made a short statement and fled into the night, avoiding an uncomfortable encounter with Pacificas most popular broadcaster before about 1500 burnt-up Pacifica activist-listeners. His oppressive desire for absolute control was permanently thwarted at that point. He began a painfully slow expulsion which drained the coffers in a court suit over his firing. Truthfully, Mr. Cooper was fired when his friend was no longer in a position to defend him. He did not simply quit. Finally, Mr. Schubb attempts to characterize his expulsion as accomplished by fundamentalists thugs. I beg to differ. The final insult to the listenership remains his blatant attempt to kick Democracy Now! off the air. But his nefarious lust for power and control did not end there. In a personal conversation in 2002, at a fundraiser to fight for the stations integrity, Howard Lahrman, informed me that Mr. Schubb attempted to gain control of the archives of Folk Scene which Mr. Lahrman had broadcast with his wife Roz Lahrman (who continues the program, now in its 4th decade). Those archives contain priceless live musical performances. It would not be expected that Mr. Schubb would overlook such an opportunity for personal power, nor would he forget how he was prevented from capitalizing upon it. Sincerely, Stuart M. Chandler

I listen to KPFK, which I discovered after 9/11 when I was trying to figure out why we were so hated (not for our freedoms!) around the world. Amy Goodman is the real deal. She asks questions and gets answers. Jerry Quickly and some others just rant and rave, hardly letting their guests speak. I already know what Jerry and Michael Slate think, so why do they have to go on ad nauseum about it during peak drive time hours? Too bad there just cannot be a balance, instead of such amateur hour fare.

Marc you sad little man. While I semi appreciate you covering the resgination of Ms. Georgia, hearing you goo all over Ian Masters is disturbing as all hell. I can clearly see that you take glee poking fun at those who question 9/11, but if you believe it is fine journalism to report week after week that the Bush administration is nothing more than a bunch of bumbling idiots (just like those darn democrats) then you must be smoking crack. You think that these people dont know what theyre doing? They have taken away all of your rights (they can peak at your email, medical records, reading habits, tap your phones, arrest you on no charges and rendition your ass to some god forsaken country) but according to Ian its nothing to get upset about, theyre nothing more than drooling fools. Come on. Cant you see that a guy who has cia spook after cia spook on his show might not be the real deal? Robert Baer's been on his show how many times? And since when do you believe the CIA?! Oh I get it, theyre all better now right?. Nowadays they're fighting for our safety, right? Gimme a break. You can pick on the tin foil programmers at the k all you want, but I'd like to know why you're such a cheerleader for the Bush administration's versions of things. Do you believe Bush and pals when it comes to the war in Iraq? Katrina? The Economy? The Environment? Perhaps you'd like him to take care of Social Security. What about the Clean Air Act? The Voting Rights Act? Huh? Do you think this guy and his Karl Rovian klan won the elections fair and square? Well do you punk? If you said "no" to any of these then why the hell would you believe them hook, line and sinker on 9/11? I guess you also believe that JFK was shot by one damn bullet and that the murders of MLK, RFK and Malcolm were just crazy coincidences. Nothing here to see folks, just go back to sleep. Wait let me guess, you also believe that cointelpro was a good thing right? maybe you also believe that the school of americas is just a misunderstood boys club. Wake up Marc - the democrats and the republicans have been hijacked for years now and they have had a different agenda than what we the people want. They are not bumbling idiots as your hero Ian would lead you to believe. You're mightier than thou tone is insulting to all the hard work over 150 programmers do day in and day out for no money at KPFK. They put their lives on the line to cover stories you call "nutty" - they are the ones getting visited by guys in suits Marc, not you. They are the ones who are trying to stop our rights from being taken away in the name of securing the homeland. They are the ones who can look their children in the eye knowing that they tried to make the world a better place. Whose eyes do you look at Marc? Perhaps you can tell me where can I hear you on the radio? Oh that's right... you're not on the radio anymore. Nice.

  • Dr. Paul Proteus 09/11/2007 9:33:00 AM

I don't know anything about Eva Georgia and the claims against her, and don't have a dog in the fight either way, but having someone as biased against KPFK and its current management as Marc Cooper write this article is about as even-handed as Fox News is "fair and balanced". I listen to the more reasonable programs on KPFK such as Ian Masters', Suzi Weissman's and Democracy Now!, and would much rather put up with the "looney" stuff around them than not have them on at all. Where is this information coming from, anyway? As a listener to the station, I would love to know more about what these programmers trying to effect a change there have to say. And just about all of the music shows absolutely blow away the devastating blandness and safety of KCRW's. You want a story on a radio station that's become exponentially more unlistenable, you'd do well to turn your dial a little further to 89.9.

  • Terry Rorie 09/11/2007 7:54:00 AM

As much as KPFK is obviously having some very public problems that could possibly effect the long-term survival of a much needed and required media outlet. Marc Cooper's comments seem to be based on sour grapes on his part. Which does nothing towards saving/growing this coveted LA radio institution. As bad or as non-professional Mr. Cooper feels the current crop of programmers there are. (And yes there's always room for improvement!) They're still far more informative, grass root, progressive, diverse, and yes even more radical than anything Marc Cooper has ever done on the air. Marc... if you're such a hot-shit broadcaster. Why aren't you on the air... somewhere??? Sounds like you would feel very much at home at KABC or perhaps even KFI!

  • A.E. White 09/09/2007 2:16:00 AM

I generally appreciate stories about radio and would be sympathetic to this one except that Marc Cooper is such a biased source for this story. Yes, he cops to that but it's still wise, when reading this piece, to consider the source. Cooper's the guy who inflicted a ranting Pat Caddell on KPFK listeners for hours upon hours of airtime, and still welcomes, uncritically, the repulsive, recently right-wing kook Christopher Hitchens as his friend. Although I respect Mr. Cooper quite a bit, I have to say it's pretty rich that his words on KPFK's miseries are appearing in a magazine that's gone from edgy and progressive (remember Michael Ventura and Steve Erickson and Harold Meyerson?) to happy Hollywood whore. Why do I get the feeling that LA Weekly just loved publishing Mr. Cooper's ripping words? Could it be because LA Weekly is, these days, radical only by virtue of Mr. Fish and a few other cartoonists - and is, otherwise, a dessicated thing, a rag mag with liberal cred? When was the last time the Weekly featured some solid reporting on an issue that was actually, um, important? I can't remember. Honestly, all I do now is read the horoscope in the Weekly, 'cause that's all it's good for anymore. As for KPFK, I've been listening for a good 17 years to that station, it changed my life, it's fed my mind and soul, and even though it has fairly pernicious problems (totally unprofessional evening news; hosts for whom English is a thoroughly unknown language; some shows, yes, that are eyeball-rollin' ludicrous) it's a precious, sacred progressive voice. As for the Weekly...well, I recommend letting your dog piss on it...

  • liberalthinker 09/06/2007 11:56:00 PM

I've listened to KPFK since high school, which makes it about 25 years for me. While I agree that this latest regime has really gone koo-koo("good luck with mass political organizing of recent immigrants with prime time in spanish only,I thought. Come on.), I think you've got to be a little less harsh on the folks who signed the latest letter of--well, outrage, I guess. It couldn't have been easy to stay there and effect positive change, given the daily madness of dealing with Georgia. I'm glad Marc extricated himself for the sake of his happiness(truly), but perhaps these other stalwarts stayed on not because they're desperate narcissists but because they held out hope that things might not be so bad, that they might possibly be changed for the better from the inside. That other hoary but often accurate old cliche, "hindsight is 20-20", applies here, I think.

  • MastersFan 09/06/2007 7:05:00 PM

I give to KPFK for about 5 reasons which translates into 5 programs that I like, including Background Briefing. I began listening after the 2000 elections and without knowledge of the past history of KPFK/Pacifica, I thought highly of the majority of the programming. However when the current batch of lefty loonies took over, the afternoon drive time programming became totally disfunctional and unreliable, except for Suzi Weissman's and Jon Wiener's prgrams. Mr. Cooper is correct, what a vast waste of resources to produce crap to a declining audience. 2-3 years ago I began to understand why KPFKs audience size remained stagnant, people would listen for a few years, get disappointed, fall awaw. This audience would get replaced with new listeners who would embark on a brief journey of listening, donating, followed by disappointment. Get rid of all these "Boards" "Councils" whatever they are called and get some professional help for this ailing outfit called KPFK.
