Alice in Bollywood

Blue13 Dance Company’s Paheliyan

Bollywood comes to Hollywood as choreographer Achinta S. McDaniel and her 25-member Blue13 Dance Company offer a contemporary spin on the Lewis Carroll classic, Alice in Wonderland. Over the past eight years, the ensemble has built an enthusiastic following with performances ranging from classic kathak, bharatanatyamand bhangra dance from the Indian subcontinent to more nontraditional explorations. To retell Alice’s adventures pursuing that pesky rabbit, McDaniel borrowed a page from how Indian film reinvented the Hollywood musical as the hugely popular Bollywood song-and-dance extravaganza. Furthering the evening’s mood, the performance will be augmented by the participation of Indian artisans, vendors, musicians and other performers. A word to the wise: the troupe’s 2006 Ford Amphitheatre performance sold out, as things that promise this much fun are apt to do. Ford Amphitheatre, 2580 Cahuenga Blvd. East, Hlywd.; Fri.-Sat., Aug. 24-25, 8 p.m.; $26 & $32, $5 students & children. (323) 461-3673 or www.fordtheatres.org.
