Going Hollywood

State Street Ballet

As midsummer temperatures spike, this Santa Barbara–based chamber ballet company promises to kick it up more than just a notch with Carmen, choreographer William Soleau’s new take on Bizet’s quintessential Spanish vixen. Artistic director Rodney Gustafson and his ensemble have toured the borders of L.A. in recent years, visiting outlying theaters in Redlands, Palmdale, Big Bear and Northridge, generally to sold-out houses and enthusiastic reviews. This visit marks the troupe’s first foray into the heart of Hollywood, armed with a ballet local critics have described as “sizzling.” If Corina Gill, who dances the title role, looks familiar, she should. Gill also dances with the Los Angeles Ballet and dazzled audiences in LAB’s debut season this past year. Carmen promises to provide further proof why she is in such demand. Ford Amphitheatre, 2580 Cahuenga Blvd. East, Hlywd.; Fri., Aug. 17, 8 p.m.; $26, $5 students & children under 12. (323) 461-3673 or www.FordTheaters.org.
