The Los Angeles Childrens Chorus is one heck of a talented group of kids, and now theyve got an opera written just for them. In the most ambitious production mounted by any childrens chorus in the nation, the LACC presents the world premiere of Keepers of the Night
, composer Peter Ash and librettist Donald Sturrocks original work about four children who fall victim to the moons magic while on a camping trip in the mysterious Forest of Arcadia. If it sounds like shades of Hansel and Gretel
, guess again: L.A. Master Chorale music director Grant Gershon, who conducts, describes the story, which contains plenty of humor and whimsy, as A Midsummer Nights Dream
meets an operatic version of American Idol
. One can only imagine the demands on young voices; the children performing in the opera prepped with a five-week Opera Camp and an opera workshop with Gershon. The cast also includes big names like mezzo-soprano Suzanna Guzman, sopranos Lynette Tapia and Lauren Libaw, and baritone Malcolm MacKenzie. Alex Theatre, 216 N. Brand Blvd., Glendale; Thurs.-Sat., July 12-14, 7:30 p.m., and Sun., July 15, 2 p.m.; $20-$60, discounts available for children. (818) 243-2539, www.alextheatre.org.
