1982: The Greatest Year in Geek Cinema — if the people at the American Cinematheque say it’s true, then it must be. In Our Own Words: South L.A. Youth Create Neighborhood Walking Tours is a fantastic program that rose out of the Southern California Library’s V-Map neighborhood mapping project. Local high school students will take you on a one-mile walk around the Vermont Corridor. It’s a chance to see an often overlooked area and learn about its history and how it’s changing. “What does it take to become an astronaut of your own psyche?” That is the question posed by Circo de Poesia, the organizers of Psychonauts. If you’re familiar with Carl Jung’s theory of personality, you have a head start as to what this 24-hour event that “aims to tickle attendees’ curiosity about the labyrinths, archetypes, symbols and dreams that lurk inside their own psyche” is all about. Some components: “A New Way of Juggling,” “Mandala Dome,” “The Place and the Thinker.” Oh — and drugs. Lots and lots of drugs. The laughionados at the Ice House apparently know What a Dad Wants — and it’s the Heineken Light Beer Ladies. Dads are invited to come to the club at 5:45 p.m. for some “sports-themed interactive games,” door prizes and ice cream sundaes, plus the aforementioned HLBLs. Don’t you wish you could have a dad as funny as Dana Gould? Witness: “The best part about parenthood is that you get to relive your childhood without your parents.” He also does a pretty good Goofy impression. Dia de los Padres is what Largo’s calling its day–after–Father’s Day comedy show with Gould, Jeff Garlin, Greg Fitzsimmons and Alterna-dad author Neal Pollack. Even though she ignored my request for quotes for our comedy issue, I still worship the ground Charlyne Yi walks on, finger-ice-skates on, plays her clarinet on and drums “John Jacob Jingleheimer Schmidt” on. She has been known to nap with her audience. She might even pretend to die onstage after instructing the crowd to resurrect her with fart-face noises.
