Russe Hour

Media City Ballet salutes the men of the Ballet Russe

The 2005 film Ballets Russes renewed interest in the legendary ballet company led by impresario Serge Diaghilev from 1909 until his sudden death in 1929, as well as the two offshoot ballet companies that continued and competed under slightly different names until the middle of the last century. This event pays tribute to five surviving Ballets Russes stars: George Zoritch, Marc Platt, Victor Moreno, Paul Maure and Andrei Tremaine. For this event, they have contributed their artistry and muscle memory to coach a new generation of dancers in some of their showcase roles, including Scheherazade, The Red Poppy and “Polovtsian Dances” from the opera Prince Igor. For Media City Ballet’s artistic director, Natasha Middleton, this event reflects her heritage: Tremaine is her father, and she grew up hearing stories of these legendary companies. The event also celebrates Zoritch’s 90th birthday, for which he coached dancer Jonathan Sharp in the title role in L’Apres-Midi d’un Faune. A post-performance gala is an additional $50. Wilshire Ebell Theater, 4401 W. Eighth St., L.A.; Sat., June 9, 7 p.m.; $35-$75. (818) 972-9692, (866) 215-1026 or www.mediacityballet.org.
