Jacaranda: Music at the Edge of Santa Monica

{mosimage} Jacaranda never seems to disappoint. This dynamic group, composed of some of L.A.’s most talented musicians, loves to program works guaranteed to amaze the ear and stretch the mind. The 2006–2007 season comes to a whopping finale this weekend with some death-defying numbers, including Alban Berg’s Piano Sonata No. 1 and Arnold Schoenberg’s Six Little Piano Pieces, Op. 19, performed by Piano Spheres virtuosi Mark Robson and Gloria Cheng; Mahler’s Six Songs From the Four Wunderhorn Symphonies, featuring the astonishing bass-baritone Dean Elzinga, accompanied by Robson; Schoenberg’s Ode to Napoleon, Op. 41, performed by Elzinga, Cheng and the Denali Quartet; and Schubert’s lovely mixed-ensemble chamber work, The Song of the Spirits Over the Water, performed by violists Robert Brophy and Alma Lisa Fernandez, cellists Stephen Erdody and Timthy Loo, double bassist Nico Abondolo, and the Jacaranda Men’s Vocal Ensemble. First Presbyterian Church of Santa Monica; Sat., May 19, 8 p.m.; $25, $10 students. (310) 451-1303 or www.jacarandamusic.org.
