The Diary of Anne Frank
{mosimage}Never been to an opera in a parking garage? Here’s your chance. Long Beach Opera presents the West Coast premiere of Russian composer Grigori Frid’s 1969 operatic monodrama, The Diary of Anne Frank, in Long Beach’s Lincoln Park parking garage. It’s a bold production of what one critic described as Frid’s “punchy, spiky, yet sensitive and dignified” portrait of the young Dutch-Jewish girl who was murdered by the Nazis, but whose ultimate faith in human goodness has inspired the world ever since. “Parking garages are practical transitional spaces for storage . . . just like Anne’s hiding place and the concentration camps,” notes the Web site. Written for solo soprano and chamber orchestra, the opera stars Ani Maldjian, first-place winner of last year’s Western Region Metropolitan Opera National Council Auditions, and it draws from episodes in the original diary. In addition, the experiences of Holocaust survivor Laura Hillman will be interspersed throughout, and Hillman will do a reading from her memoirs.
