New choreography from company artistic director Washington, some favorites from the repertoire and a reconstructed masterpiece from modern-dance legend Katherine Dunham highlight this celebratory Black History Month concert. Washington’s newest takes its title and theme from the Paul Laurence Dunbar poem “We Wear the Mask,” while “The Movement” draws on a palette of dance genres — including ballet, modern, African and tap — in its tribute to the 1960s civil rights movement. And “Rumba Trio” celebrates the work of the late Katherine Dunham, known as a cultural anthropologist as well as a revered dance-maker. In addition to Washington’s stylish company dancers, look for the energized youth ensemble, some 50 strong, to amp up the heat at this party. Lula Washington Dance Theater, 3773 S. Crenshaw Blvd., L.A.; Sat., Feb. 24, 8 p.m.; Sun., Feb. 25, 3 p.m.; $25 in advance, $35 at door; $20 students & seniors. (313) 292-5852 or www.lulawashington.com.
