Emily Bernstein Benefit Concert

Upon hearing Emily Bernstein’s clarinet solo in John Williams’ score for The Terminal, the story goes, director Steven Spielberg made the unheard-of demand that Bernstein’s name appear in the film’s end credits. Traditionally, individual members of studio orchestras remain anonymous, but that’s how good Emily Bernstein was. Tragically, the principal clarinetist of both L.A. Opera and the Pasadena Symphony died of cancer in 2005, at age 46. This weekend, the Pasadena Symphony celebrates Bernstein’s life and devotion to young musicians with a special benefit concert for the Emily Bernstein Fund for New and Emerging Artists. The program includes a video about Emily’s life, and performances by 8-year-old prodigy Marc Yu; young cellist Isaac Bovyer of the Pasadena Youth Symphony Orchestra and his dad, Gary, Hollywood Bowl Orchestra principal clarinetist; the dazzling pianist Robert Thies; and 13-year-old clarinetist/cellist Joseph Green, Bernstein’s student until she could no longer continue to teach, who says, “This is doing something she would have wanted, and would help her in a way.” Pasadena Presbyterian Church, 585 E. Colorado Blvd., Pasadena; Sun., Jan. 21, 7:30 p.m.; free, but donations to the Emily Bernstein Fund appreciated. (626) 793-7172 or www.pasadenasymphony.org.
