At first glance, James Siena’s mazelike, brightly colored abstract drawings resemble patterns found in African textile or Peruvian embroidery. Following his repetitive and dense lines becomes a hypnotic meditation. What gets me every time I see a significant number of his works is the way that he plays with depth; some literally pop out at you while others suck you in to their centers. Each one is the same size in the same frame, but vastly different. Spend some time with these small gems.

Anna Sew Hoy, Julia Kunin, Sterling Ruby and Tiago Carneiro da Cunha at Karyn Lovegrove Gallery Most of the sculpture in this group show, with the exception of Brazilian artist Tiago Carneiro da Cunha, who works with resin, is ceramic. Anna Sew Hoy’s work has matured into knots that evoke a crude but complex geometry coupled with organic elements like braided hair or cotton fabric. Brooklyn-based artist Julia Kunin creates towerlike sculptures of insects and sea life forming precarious tumbleweeds of antennae, claws and wings. Kunin plays with the line between the grotesque and the delicate, and all the works in the show breathe life into a once passé medium.
