Alan Gampel
Anyone who loves museums and music should bow down before Bill Vestal, creator of “Sundays Live,” where you can browse LACMA’s many exhibits, go museum gift shopping, have an on-site meal, and finish with a fabulous free concert at the Bing. This Sunday, pianist Alan Gampel is the featured artist, performing a program that includes Gershwin’s Rialto Ripples, three movements from Copland’s Rodeo, Joplin’s Maple Leaf Rag, and The Banjo and Bamboula by Louis Moreau Gottschalk, a.k.a. the American Liszt. I have performed The Banjo myself, and it’s a devil — played on all the black keys, bouncing from low to high, it’s a variation on “Camptown Races” that makes the piano sound like a speed-strummed banjo. If anyone can pull off this showstopper, it’s Gampel, who’s been winning one major award after another since the age of 7, and who combines an electrifying technique with a keen sense of musical humor.
