Lyon Opera Ballet

Die Grosse Fuge (Photo by Michael Cavalca)It may have opera in its title. It may have ballet in its name. This French company known for breaking all the rules returns to town, defying expectations about ballet and, well, breaking more rules. Ballet dancers must be bone-thin? Choreographer Maguy Marin puts 20 dancers in padded suits and sends the pretend chubbies onstage with Bach’s second and third Brandenburg concertos to delightful effect in Groosland. Beethoven’s music should never be choreographed? Anne Teresa de Keersmaeker took that as a dare, launching eight male dancers in Die Grosse Fuge. Dance maker Sasha Waltz, often compared with innovator and rule-breaker Pina Bausch, selected Schubert’s Fantasie in F minor for her first collaboration with this company. Expect the unexpected as Waltz’s Fantasie challenges Lyon’s fearless dancers to ply their craft partnered with shards of light. Royce Hall, UCLA, Wstwd.; Fri.-Sat., Oct. 20-21, 8 p.m.; $26-$48. (310) 825-2101.
