Dinh Q. Lê “The Imaginary Country” at Shoshana Wayne Gallery
Dinh Q. Lê and his family fled Vietnam and immigrated to the United States in 1979; now he has returned to his home country and makes most of his work there. At Shoshana Wayne, Lê shows a multichannel video collaboration addressing the Vietnamese diaspora and its complex relationship to the mythology surrounding the war and ideas of home. Lê is best known for his incredibly powerful large-scale photo weavings, which precisely intertwine black-and-white images from the Vietnam War with brightly colored contemporary commercial images, juxtaposing and melding histories and cultural changes. The result is a pixilated view of past and present, there and here, then and now.

Wolfgang Tillmans at UCLA Hammer Museum
The first major museum show for the German photographer features some 300 works. The installation promises to be spectacular: Tillmans, who emerged in the early 1990s and is perhaps best known for photographing objects and quiet moments of everyday life, is known for arranging framed and unframed works in freeform groups so that there is a dialogue and equality between his images. He will appear at the museum in a talk with Mark Wigley at 4 p.m. on the day of the opening, Sunday, Sept. 17.
