Media City Ballet: Pasión de España

Looks like Spain is the country on everyone’s mind this summer. A flamenco festival just concluded in Orange County. Closer in, Pacifico Dance Company devoted a concert to choreography reflecting the influence of traditional Spanish dance forms on the Mexican folkloric movement. Ballet takes its turn as Southern California’s fascination with Spanish dance continues. This Burbank-based troupe celebrates its fifth-anniversary season with a program devoted to ballets about Spain and Spanish dance. Yes, the dainty art of pointe shoes has long drawn on Spanish-themed music, dance and literature for some of its most celebrated ballets: Don Quixote, Carmen and Bolero— all of which are on the program here. Choreographers Askar Kettebekov and Natasha Middleton-Kettebekov have brought in guest artists from Russia and Korea to augment company dancers. Just the ticket to set the mood for some tapas and vino rojo. At the Alex Theater, 216 N. Brand Blvd., Glendale; Sat., Aug. 19, 8 p.m.; $18-$40. (818) 243-2539.
