Thomas Campbell, Suzan Woodruff, Ernest Silva

If anyone tried to get inside Thomas Campbell’s mind, they would likely find a never-ending psychedelic-wave ride of beautiful alien logic. Even with the clues offered by a re-creation of his desk/work space in his new show at Roberts & Tilton, you get the feeling that you’re only scratching the surface of what this multitalented filmmaker/photographer/painter must process. Rising out of the skate/surf melee made legend by curator Aaron Rose (who gave Campbell his first show in NYC in 1994), “Yep” is a new painting show that gets back to basics — showcasing a sophistication of line, composition and texture. Utilizing influences from Asian architecture, street-art randomness and hand-drawn alphabets, the work is amazingly fun to look at. While Paul Frank Industries has just licensed a series of accessories using Campbell’s signature organic-pod creatures, this show fronts a monumental “retrospective” at the Dutch Museum of Het Domein in September.

“Yep” at Roberts & Tilton, 6150 Wilshire Blvd., L.A. (323) 549-0223. Thru Aug. 12.
