Nuevo Ballet Espaņol: Flamenco Directo

Artistic directors Angel Rojas and Carlos Rodriguez began as rivals, sharing the top prize in a 1994 national competition in Spain. Fortunately, they decided that if they couldn’t beat each other, they should join forces. Despite their relative youth, over the past decade the duo share major credit for the expanding popularity of flamenco, particularly in their introduction of jazz and modern dance elements to the fiery, percussive dance style. Comparison to the mega-hit Riverdance is apt for this Madrid-based ensemble that has broadened the art form’s audience with experiments that include flamenco set to the music of Sting and Gloria Estefan. The full-length Flamenco Directo, which was selected for their L.A. debut, was also their calling card during the troupe’s London debut and proved a big hit. Stick around after the show for a discussion with the artists. At the Music Center Dorothy Chandler Pavilion, 135 N. Grand Ave., dwntwn.; Sat., April 22, 7:30 p.m.; Sun., April 23, 2 p.m.; $75-$20.
