Ballet NY

With American Ballet Theater and New York City Ballet occupying large swaths of the landscape in New York City, this 9-year-old chamber company has established and held turf as a lean, mean ballet machine that appeals to more adventurous audiences. Led by former NYCB principal Judith Fugate and Boston Ballet/Béjart alum Medhi Bahiri, the troupe specializes in repertoire anchored by George Balanchine and accented by offerings from some of the more arresting choreographers working today. The cause is aided by a crop of dancers with the technique, artistry and athleticism to tackle anything choreographers can throw at them. The program on this visit includes selections from Who Cares?, Balanchine’s deliciously jazzy riff on Gershwin tunes; Helen Heineman’s Hook-Up; Orange from Houston Ballet artistic director Stanton Welch; and Jodie Gatesnow and again, which holds particular interest because this alum of the Joffrey Ballet and William Forsythe’s cutting-edge Frankfurt Ballet now heads her own company in Laguna Beach. At Cerritos Center for the Performing Arts, 12700 Center Court Dr.; Fri., April 14, 8 p.m.; $36-$20. (562) 467-8818 or www.cerritoscenter.com.
