Hijinks in the High Desert

The Style Council visits Joshua Tree, oh, and they hear there’s a park there . . .

Three-quarters of the Style Council needed to get out of Dodge, and what better place to escape to than the wide-open spaces of Joshua Tree, a magical place where time seems to stand still and where locals claim the vastness has created homegrown telepathy. Spin and Margie’s Desert Hide-A-Way was the perfect spot for a few party girls on the lam to hole up. Our colorful little cabin had a picturesque desert view, and co-owner Mindy Kaufman gave us plenty of suggestions for things to do. Proving true that old adage — you can take the girls out of the party, but you can’t take the party out of the girls — we never did get around to hiking in the park.

Instead, we got our chakras tuned at the Integratron, found out how the West was won in Pioneertown, knocked back some whiskeys at Pappy and Harriet’s, passed the peace pipe at a local party, and joined the cult of Gram Rabbit, the local “desert space rock” band kind enough to show us around this weird desert world during our first, 24-hour visit.
