Radio Ga-GaCongrats (we mean it, man!) go out to The Sex Pistolsfor rejecting their induction into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame on punk principle (and hencenot getting on the cover of Rolling Stone as scheduled) this week. [Shame on Rolling Stone?! — ed.] John “the artist formerly known as Rotten” Lydon paid both Jonesy’s Indie 103.1 show and Jimmy Kimmel’s talk show visits last Friday to rant about it, and he was as pissy and hissy and brilliant as ever. We’re addicted to his mate’s Jukebox, but our fave radio rebel will probably always be Monkey Man, the evil genius behind Pirate Cat Radio, the very illegal station that captured the hearts of L.A. back in ’02 (it even won an L.A. Weekly Music Award that year). Monkey has been doing his rogue broadcasting in S.F. for the past few years, but it seems he’s back in our fair city, and, after a mysterious phone call Nightranger received from the elusive airwaver, we’re sure everybody will be hearing him (via 87.9 FM, his old home on the dial) as soon as he gets a bigger and better transmitter spot. In the meantime, catch his Web station at www.piratecatradio.com. Another underground station that’s been burning up the Internet lately, Little Radio(www.littleradio.com) has also been adding an impressive list of jocks to its cache, including L.A. Times music writer Kevin Bronson, Club Underground’s DJLarryand Rock-n-Role designer Ali MacLean.
Mods & Knockers Speaking of radio gents, ran into Rodney Bingenheimer (along with Miles Copeland, Spencer Davis and Dennis Quaid) last Friday at the premiere of Quad, a musical staging of The Who’s Quadrophenia at the Avalon, and he told us that for the first time ever, his KROQ show is being streamed online, giving him a whole new international audience. And by the way, if ya saw his Mayor movie and thought he seemed kinda sad, Rodney alleges the film was misleadingly edited, and says the negative/somber tone was just part of filmmaker George Hickenlooper’s personal agenda. Needless to say, Rodney and Hickenlooper — who’s now directing Factory Girl, the Edie Sedgwick biopic starring Sienna Miller — no longer speak. But back to Quaid — er, Quad. Not only do the sets for this thrilling, Daltrey-approved piece look like something right outta local 6T’s fave-raves like Café Bleu and Shout, but the groovy getups were put together by L.A. club regular Iris Henry. Keep your ears pricked for lead actor Stephen Shareaux, a Brandon Flowers look-alike whose vocals literally gave us goose bumps . . . From bumps to humps, we popped in at the Knitting Factory later for Sex City Punx, featuring porn star Kurt Lockwood singing and celebrating his directorial debut, The Decline ofWestern Civilization Part 69: The Porno Years, a filthy takeoff of the Spheeris docs. Obviously the movie (screened in the club) was more about asses than axes, and the salacious scene was a mix of bulgingly bad boob jobs, hairy monsters and superfreaks, which had us running scared right outta there.
