Fireball Ministry

Local bands, man

WHAT: The metal that riffeth, that roareth, that passeth understanding. These devils breathe with such steady power, they must even snore rock. Full-range songwriting makes for a headbang that hangs on.WHO: James A. Rota on melodic chokehold vocals, pissed off like Ozzy on angel dust. Rota and Emily J. Burton on effortlessly locked axes, too rude for their former hometown, Cincinnati. John Oreshnick on boiling-oil drum spill. New guy Johny Chow (Systematic, My Ruin) on edgy bass.NOW WITH MORE COWBELL: Fireball’s third full-length, the new Their Rock Is Not Our Rock, recorded in Dave Grohl’s and Elliott Smith’s studios, was produced by Nick Raskulinecz, who’d augered his earholes on the band years before landing employment with Queens of the Stone Age, Velvet Revolver and Foo Fighters. And it’s engineered by Mike Terry (Halford, Ash). Does it sound good? Duh.ROAD WARRIORS: Fireball Ministry are about to shove off on their fifth road stomp of the year, this time with Clutch. They’ve also toured with Dio, Anthrax, Motörhead and yo mama.HOW TRULY ROCK THEY? Truly enough to have covered, with perfect cred, ’70s scripture by Aerosmith, Judas Priest and Alice Cooper.OH,THAT CARSON: Fireball toast NBC’s Last Call With Carson Daly December 16. Their video for “Sundown” will soon assault MTV2’s Headbangers Ball. And they just guested on Indie 103.1’s metal show, Chaos.FAVORITE BEER: Yuengling, “an amazing beer from Pennsylvania,” Rota raves.ROLLING PAPER: Zig Zag and Tops — “combined, that’s where ZZ Top got their name.” (We can die now.)
