Mr. Blume also was under the impression that we have no accountability to anyone. Very accurate attendance records are kept. Each student must have a portfolio, as in every regular public school, with completed work that they have done in the required subjects and electives. In order for students to graduate, they must complete the same requirements as every other student in the state of California. My boys take the same Stanford Test of Academic Skills that students take in the regular public schools. They always come out average and above average in every subject area. One son has graduated from HIS and is doing very well.

Is teaching morality unconstitutional? According to Mr. Blume’s article, I teach morality to my child and therefore am in violation of the Constitution. My four children attended a total of 32 years in the regular public school system. From my experience, morality was definitely taught in the public schools.

We have been with the HIS charter school for six years. We have not had the problems that were mentioned by the other parents interviewed for Mr. Blume’s article. Our experience has been a positive one.

HOWARD BLUME REPLIES: I respect Ms. Roloff’s right to disagree with my analysis, and I regret that she is displeased, but the article does not misrepresent what she told me. Nor did the article state what she has inferred from it. I never wrote that she uses school funds to teach religion. Nor did I accuse her or Horizon of doing anything unconstitutional.
